Reconciliation Action Plan

Annual Reconciliation Action Plan Report 2025

At Fairfield Primary School, we envision a future where every student is deeply connected to Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. Our mission is to provide learning opportunities that foster meaningful engagements with Indigenous perspectives. This includes embedding First Nations cultures into literacy, numeracy, science and humanities. We understand the importance of respecting and celebrating the world's oldest living continuous culture.

While currently only a small percentage of our student body identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, we recognise the need to bridge cultural gaps and promote understanding. We are committed to equipping our students with a comprehensive knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and cultures, enabling them to become informed global citizens. By nurturing open-mindedness and embracing diverse viewpoints, our students will be well-prepared to be a voice for their generation, by promoting inclusivity and reconciliation.

The Koorie Perspectives School Improvement Team (SIT) wanted to use this newsletter to report back to the FPS community what we have been working on this school year, and our progress on the FPS Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

RAP Actions

RAP Actions are the commitments you make in your Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). There are 40 RAP Actions in total, 14 of which are required to maintain consistency and quality across all RAPs. RAP Actions are important for strengthening relationships, respect and opportunities in the classroom, around the school or service, and with the community. They also present quality learning opportunities tied to professional standards and curriculum frameworks.

All action links below are hyperlinked to more information about what each action entails if you wish to dig deeper.

Our Actions to Date

Cultural Responsiveness for Staff

  • This year we have spent time researching a list of possible future professional development opportunities for FPS staff. These are being reviewed by the team and will be discussed further with leadership.

Welcome to Country

  • Held a Smoking Ceremony/Welcome to Country assembly for 2024 and 2025 Art for all.

Celebrate National Reconciliation Week

  • Developed school wide lesson sequences for National Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day. This included lessons for both junior and senior school cohorts on what Reconciliation is, why it’s important, why we celebrate it on these days, Mabo Day and Sorry Day/The Apology. This also involved FPS fundraising for Wear It Yellow Day.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in the Classroom, Celebrate Days of National Significance, Teach about Reconciliation, Curriculum Planning & Acknowledgement of Country

  • Developed school wide lesson sequences for Closing the Gap Day
  • Curated a list of learning and planning resources for staff to use when planning for Indigenous Perspectives across all curriculum areas.
  • Whole school participation in Indigenous Literacy Day/Week.
  • Planned lessons for teachers to utilise during the ‘start up’ program at the beginning of 2025 to create a consistent approach to Acknowledgement of Country and when this happens across the school.
  • Common Ground First Nations Bedtime Stories.
  • NAIDOC Week resources shared with school community.
  • ANZAC Day resources for staff exploring Indigenous perspectives and involvement.
  • Remembrance Day resources for staff exploring Indigenous perspectives and involvement.

Our Next Steps

If you want to get involved or give feedback, we have created this survey for community members to contribute to. Whilst this used to occur at in-person RAP meetings, we wanted to make the process of getting this update and contributing to the discussion more accessible for all community members at FPS.
