Year 1 Spotlight

Celebrating the End of a Great Year!
All the students are getting very excited as we approach the end of a very busy term. There are mixed feelings as we approach the end of Grade 1 and get ready for a new adventure in Grade 2.
Reading
In reading, we have been asking questions about texts before, during, and after reading. These kinds of questions not only help students engage more deeply with the text but also encourage them to wonder and predict what will happen next.
When we read 'The Mess We Made', by Michelle Lord, the Grade 1 students asked questions that were relevant to both the book and the real world, such as:
- Why is there so much rubbish in the ocean?
- When will we clean up the ocean?
- What will happen to the animals in the ocean?
Writing
This term we have been learning about all different kinds of poetry! We have started with rhyming poems. This week, we have been learning how to write an AABB poem. An AABB poem rhymes in pairs. Here are a few poems created by our talented students:
The Crocodile
There once was a crocodile,
Who gave a little smile.
He said I will catch a rat,
On a mat.
But a bird heard,
Every single word.
She told the rat,
Who was sleeping on the cat.
So the rat ran,
As fast as he can.
And the crocodile,
Never gave another smile.
~ Written by Leo, 1A
My Favourite Fruit
Watermelons are juicy,
But I'd rather eat muesli.
I wear hats,
And I do not like cats.
There’s a mouse,
In my house!
He’s on my pillow
And I named him Lillow.
~ Written by Lina, 1A
The Chook Book
There was a chook,
That had a book.
His name is Lou,
He has a tattoo.
He has a big bed,
His favourite colour is red.
~ Written by Roy, 1A
Maths
In Maths we have been exploring division and sharing equally, but we also found out that sometimes we have a remainder. We also looked at Mass and compared and ordered the weight of objects using balance scales and handmade scales using coat hangers.
This week we are looking at capacity using sand and liquid. We have discovered that a small, wide container can sometimes hold more than a tall, narrow container.
When I used the balance scales, I weighed six textas and that equaled two erasers. ~ Milly, 1B
I found that two cups weighed the same as nine textas. ~ Mischa, 1B
I discovered that a pair of headphones weighed the same as nine textas. ~ Henry B, 1B
We measured containers with sand. The wider container held more sand than a tall container. Even though the container is taller, it doesn't mean it has more capacity. ~ Jessie,1B
Inquiry
Our Inquiry topic this term is ‘Toy Designer’, we have been looking at how different things move and which forces are used. In the incursion, students worked in small groups to make an arcade game using the forces of push and pull.
I felt really excited to make our Wack a Bunny and you had to use push and pull. ~ Isabella U, 1B
We had to use a push and pull force to make a game for the Toy Town Factory. ~ Sandy, 1B
It was really fun making our game and you had to hit animals with ping pong balls. ~ Elly, 1B
