Physical Education

Welcome
We hope all our students and families enjoyed a relaxing winter break and are ready for another active and exciting term in Physical Education. Term 3 brings several exciting sporting opportunities for our students, including our Year 4–6 Interschool Athletics Carnival, Year 3 and 4 District Basketball Gala Day, and the Waverley Central District Athletics Carnival. These events provide students with the chance to challenge themselves, demonstrate teamwork and resilience, and represent our school with pride and sportsmanship.
This term, all year levels will continue to build their movement skills and game understanding through a variety of engaging Physical Education units and activities. Students will participate in lessons that focus on teamwork, strategy, coordination, and fitness, while developing confidence and enjoyment through active participation.

Prep
This term, our Prep students will participate in two exciting Physical Education units: Basketball and Striking (One-Handed Two-Handed Striking). In the Basketball Unit, students will explore key ball-handling skills such as dribbling, passing, catching, and shooting through fun, age-appropriate games and activities. The focus will be on developing coordination, body control, spatial awareness, and teamwork while building confidence in using basketball equipment. In the Striking Unit, students will be introduced to a variety of striking activities using different equipment such as bats, paddles, racquets, and balloons. Through engaging games and challenges, students will develop hand-eye coordination, timing, balance, and control while learning how to strike objects safely and effectively. These activities encourage persistence, participation, and enjoyment while helping students build confidence in their movement abilities through active play.

Year 1 and 2
Term 3 offers an engaging and active experience for our Year 1 and 2 students as they participate in two exciting Physical Education units: Basketball and One-Handed Striking. In our Basketball Unit, students will continue to develop their fundamental movement skills by learning and refining techniques such as dribbling, passing, catching, and shooting. In the One-Handed Striking Unit, students will explore striking skills using a variety of equipment such as bats, paddles, and racquets. They will practise striking stationary and moving objects through fun activities and games that develop timing, coordination, balance, and control. Students will also learn about safe participation, taking turns, encouraging others, and working cooperatively during gameplay.

Year 3 and 4
This term, our Year 3 and 4 students will participate in a diverse Physical Education program designed to develop their skills, fitness, and confidence across a range of activities. Throughout the first part of the term, students will focus on basketball, building fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and teamwork through engaging drills and modified games. Students will also take part in AFL sessions, where they will develop kicking, handballing, marking, and game awareness while learning the importance of cooperation and sportsmanship.
As the term progresses, students will be introduced to fitness testing, which will provide opportunities for students to measure and improve their strength, endurance, speed, and flexibility while developing an understanding of the importance of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.
We’re looking forward to a fantastic term filled with skill development, personal growth, and plenty of fun as students challenge themselves, build confidence, and enjoy a wide range of physical activities in PE!

Year 5 and 6
This term, Year 5 and 6 students will participate in a dynamic Physical Education program designed to challenge their skills, fitness, and teamwork across a variety of sports and activities. Students will begin by developing their basketball skills, focusing on dribbling, passing, shooting, defending, and game strategy through a range of drills, small-sided games, and match-play situations. They will also take part in AFL sessions, where they will refine their kicking, marking, handballing, and decision-making skills while exploring team structures and tactical play.
As the term progresses, students will participate in fitness testing, which will provide opportunities for students to assess and improve their strength, endurance, speed, and flexibility, while developing an understanding of goal setting and the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle.
With plenty of opportunities for skill development, competition, and personal growth, this term promises to be an exciting and rewarding experience in PE. We look forward to seeing students challenge themselves, demonstrate resilience, and enjoy the wide range of activities on offer throughout the term.

How can you support your child’s Physical Education learning at home?
- Throw and Catch Challenge:Use a pair of socks or a soft ball—see how many times you can catch without dropping!
- Jump, Hop, Balance: Try 10 frog jumps, 10 hops on one foot, and then balance like a flamingo for 10 seconds.
- Balloon Keep-Up: Can you keep a balloon in the air for 30 seconds without letting it touch the ground?
- Foot Skills Practice:Dribble a soccer ball (or any ball) around obstacles like cones, shoes, or bottles.
- Fitness Circuit: Try 20-star jumps, 10 squats, run on the spot for 20 seconds—repeat!
