First Aid

Recently there have been new recommendations to the Asthma Treatment Guidelines nationally.

For adolescents  12+ yrs and adults, salbutamol (ventolin or blue preventer inhalers) are not adequate for treating asthma symptoms alone.   The recommendations now advise that there be either ICS (inhaled corticosteroid)  or AIR (Anti Inflammatory Reliever) treatment as well to help with the inflammatory and maintenance of treatment for asthma.

They have found that using salbutamol/ventolin inhaler only for treatment is in fact causing and may increase severe/life threatening asthma exacerbations.

WHAT DO I DO if I’m only on reliever medication – It is best to speak to your GP as they will need to advise which medication may be best for your particular circumstances.
