Auslan News

This week in Auslan, Prep students have been learning all about family signs. They drew family portraits and labelled them with Auslan signs, learnt new family-themed songs in Auslan, including the fan favourite Baby Shark, and even created their own Baby Shark puppets to help practise their signing at home.

Grade 1 students have finished their topic on farm animals and created their own barns, where they translated Auslan signs by drawing the matching animals inside. They also participated in group signing games, including “What Animal Do You Have?”, which sparked plenty of competition and giggles.

Grade 2 students have been building on their basic vocabulary skills by translating their own “lunchboxes” and then signing what they had to a partner, who needed to translate it back into English. Activities like these help students develop foundational conversational skills through turn-taking, as well as expressive and receptive language practice.
