Grade 5 News

This term in Maths, the Grade 5 students have been working hard across several different areas and showing great growth in both confidence and problem-solving skills. We have spent a lot of time building our understanding of fractions and decimals, learning how to compare, order and represent them in different ways. Students have also been making connections between fractions and decimals and applying this knowledge to a range of activities and real-world problems.
In Number, students have continued developing their skills with the four operations using whole numbers. We have been practising efficient strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, while also focusing on explaining our mathematical thinking clearly. Students have been encouraged to choose strategies that work best for them and to justify how they reached their answers.
In Measurement, we have been exploring mass and capacity. Students have been estimating, measuring and comparing objects using metric units such as grams, kilograms, millilitres and litres. We have also been discussing why some units are more appropriate than others, depending on what is being measured, and students have enjoyed participating in lots of hands-on activities using measuring equipment around the classroom.
It has been fantastic to see students becoming more confident when tackling challenging tasks and sharing their thinking during class discussions. We are very proud of the effort students have been putting into their learning and look forward to continuing to build on these skills throughout the term.
Kind Regards,
The Grade 5 Team.
