Getting Ready to Learn: Why a Calm Start to the Day is Important
The first few minutes of the school day can have a big impact on a child’s wellbeing, confidence and readiness to learn. At Park Orchards Primary School, we intentionally begin each day with a calm and welcoming morning routine that helps every child settle into the day.
From 8:45 am, our teachers are in their classrooms to warmly greet each student as they arrive. A friendly welcome helps children feel seen, valued and connected, strengthening their sense of belonging and setting a positive tone for the day ahead.
Students then participate in Getting Ready to Learn time. Rather than jumping straight into academic tasks, children are given a short period of structured activities. Depending on the class, these activities may be teacher-directed or chosen from a range of purposeful options.
This time is much more than “busy work.” It provides children with an opportunity to transition from home to school and regulate their emotions before learning begins.
Mornings can be very different for every child. Some children arrive feeling excited and ready to learn, while others may have experienced a rushed morning, separation worries, unexpected changes to routine or simply need a little more time to settle. Providing a calm, predictable start helps children feel safe and supported, allowing their brains to move from “survival mode” into “learning mode.”
Research tells us that children learn best when they feel calm, connected and emotionally regulated. A settled start to the day supports attention, concentration, memory, problem-solving and self-regulation. It also helps reduce stress, encourages positive interactions with peers and creates a classroom environment where everyone is ready to participate and learn.
Our morning routine also includes a short Circle Time. This may involve a simple GEM (Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness) Chat or another community-building activity. These conversations help children connect with one another, practise listening and speaking skills, develop empathy and strengthen the positive relationships that support learning and wellbeing.
By prioritising connection before curriculum, we are helping children build the emotional foundations they need to thrive. A calm start to the day supports not only academic success but also confidence, resilience and a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
