Year 1 and 2 Excursion to Bundoora Heritage Park

On Tuesday 21st July, our Year 1 and 2 students enjoyed a wonderful day exploring the past at Bundoora Heritage Park. Throughout the day, they stepped back in time to discover what life was like many years ago.

The students visited the old schoolhouse, where they experienced what school was like in the "olden days". They learnt that boys and girls sat separately and that children were expected to follow the saying, "Children should be seen and not heard." The students compared this to our classrooms today and discussed how schools have changed over time.

There was also plenty of fun to be had as students played traditional games, including skittles, hula hoops and even gumboot throwing. They also had the opportunity to learn about an old-fashioned printing press and proudly printed their own names to take home as a keepsake.

The students also visited a historic home and searched for familiar household items such as a television, refrigerator, heater and indoor toilet. The students were fascinated to discover how different everyday life was before many of the modern conveniences we take for granted. Washing clothes, sweeping and churning cream into butter was definitely FUN.

An interesting session the students took part in was focused on the Indigenous people of the local area. Students learnt about Aboriginal culture, traditions and the important connection First Nations peoples have with Country. This was a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of the history and significance of the land on which we live and learn.

It was a fantastic day filled with hands-on learning, curiosity and fun. We want to thank our parent helpers for giving up their time to support us on the excursion. Their assistance helped make the day a wonderful success for everyone.
