Year 7 Mathematics

This term, our Year 7 students have been tackling some units of maths that are new concepts for them and that will come up again each year throughout high school mathematics. It has been a jam-packed term, full of lots of learning!

They started the term learning to solve equations using the basic algebra skills they developed in Term 1. This involved skills such as using inverse operations and learning that “what we do to one side of the equation, we do to the other”! All the Year 7s had great success with this unit, and Mr Watson, Mrs Cox and Mr Miles were impressed with their efforts. We then moved on to plotting points on the Cartesian Plane and learning about linear equations. Ratios was our next topic, a short but important unit, and our Year 7s discovered the similarities between ratios and fractions. Last week, we started a new unit on angles. We will be learning about angles in triangles and quadrilaterals, as well as angle properties on parallel lines. We also aim to look at volume and 3D shapes at the end of this term and continue into Term 4.

It has been wonderful to see our Year 7s building their confidence and developing their mathematical skills throughout the term, and we look forward to seeing what they can achieve in Term 4!

Hair, Beauty, Body and Soul

Our Year 9/10 Hair and Beauty students have been enjoying a wide range of practical skills in our classes so far this semester. Engaging in theory, students have learnt about different hair and skin types- modifying ‘treatment plans’ for case studies. Recently students had a great excursion to NRG salon in Ulverstone. There they learnt about some of the OHS requirements of running a business, what being a hairdressing apprentice entails, and practically participating in a workshop where they got to wash and blow-dry hair professionally. Back in the classroom, they have safely practised heat styling, updos and even hair-colouring techniques using swatches. 

As part of the ‘Body and Soul’ component of the class, students have also explored women’s health and wellbeing through a guest presentation from an Exercise Physiologist and Health Teacher. They then put their learning into action during an excursion to SPLASH, where they participated in a group fitness class. 

The students are excited to move into their next module on nail art and make-up, where they will continue to learn and workshop with industry professionals, before culminating their learning in an all in design task based on a set theme or historical time period.
