Mrs Guy - Prep / 1 and Miss Thomas - Prep/1

We have been very busy over the past two weeks. In Literacy we have learnt about more letters of the alphabet, their most common sounds and blending those sounds to make words. We have used this knowledge to then spell rhyming words. We have begun writing sentences with uppercase letters to begin, spaces between words and ending punctuation. We have learnt how to reread our written work to ensure it makes sense. We have worked on nouns being people, places or things and grouping pictures according to their noun group.

A big congratulations to Amelia, Chandler, Cole, Daxton, Daphne, Floyd, Jordan, Levi, Lilly and Samara who have read over 25 nights. Great effort! Dont forget we have a competition for who reads the most nights!

In Numeracy we finished our unit on numbers and place value where students worked on recognising, making and ordering numbers to 20 for the Preps and 120 for the Grade 1s, using counters,  number lines and charts.

We began our unit on time this week. This unit will include sequencing days of the week and times of the day, including morning, lunchtime, afternoon and night-time. We will be  learning to connect these times to familiar events and actions describing the duration and sequence of events using years, months, weeks, days and hours.

In Geography we have been revising our safe places and why we belong to places.

In Auslan we have been learning about signing classroom objects and following a signed instruction such as please get your pencil.

In Design Technologies we have been learning how indigenous Australians used natural materials to make items such as canoes made from hollowing out a tree or using bark to float. We learnt about how stones were used to grind seeds or made into knives attached to wooden sticks by reeds.

A reminder to please have a change of clothes in your child's bag for 'little accidents' and a plastic bag to send wet clothes home.

If you have a current Working With Children's Check and are free from 3.00pm-3.20pm we need help in our classrooms for our Reading Circles. Students of this age need an adult to sit with them, listen to them read their take home reader and swap their books.

Literacy

Mrs Monson and I are super impressed by how well students are learning about Grammar. We have learnt about nouns, verbs and adjectives, but our students have now been learning about adverbs, and can recognise adverbs in a sentence.

Maths

We are now starting our new subject, learning about Time. Time isn't just about what time it is!! We are learning about time sequencing: does it take seconds, minutes, months, or a year? Days of the week, months of the year, calendars, and also learning to tell the time to half past and o'clock!!

On Fridays in class, we check reading diaries.

Students have access to readers at school, they can also access readers on the Little Learners Loves Literacy website, their QR codes are in the front of their diaries, or it could even be a book from home. Students also love writing in their own diaries; they just need to write the title of the book they have read. We have a Reading Nights wall in our class. Once we achieve 25 nights, 50 nights, etc., our name goes up on the wall. Once students achieve 200 nights, we have a range of different prizes that the students can pick from 😊
