The Gradual Release of Responsibility -  The "Training Wheels" Approach to Learning 🚲

Ever wonder how we take a student from "I don't get it" to "I've got this!"? We use a strategy called The Gradual Release of Responsibility - GRR, kind of like the training wheels we see on bikes when we are learning to ride.

It’s a simple 4-step journey that ensures no student feels like they’re being thrown into the deep end:

  • I DO: I, the teacher, demonstrate the skill and "think out loud" so the students see how it’s done.
  • WE DO: We practice together as a class. I’m right there to catch any wobbles!
  • YOU DO IT TOGETHER: Students team up. Talking through a problem helps them "own" the answer.
  • YOU DO: The training wheels come off! Students tackle the task solo with total confidence.

The Result? Students don't just memorise facts—they build the independence to solve problems on their own.
