WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN THE PE CLASSES

It has been an extremely busy term for the PE department:

  • Open night
  • Preps and Year 2 have enjoyed participating in the Gymnastic unit
  • With Mrs Peluso being on LSL, the Year 1’s have continued to work on their Fundamental Motor Skills, whilst, the Year 3 have enjoyed a Soccer unit.
  • Year 4 students finished off the Rounders unit and have recently enjoyed the European Handball unit, which will continue for a couple of weeks next term.
  • Through a Sporting Schools grant, the Year 5 students had a 3 week Golf clinic with pro Paul Boxall.
  • Year 6 students have enjoyed a Table Tennis unit. This week the top two pairs from each grade played in a Round Robin tournament. The winning pair was Arlo and Jack.

If you are interested, there are collages on the PE notice board, showcasing some of these programs.

SPORTING SCHOOLS – YEAR 5 AND 6 GOLF CLINIC

I am always trying to introduce different sports to the students at LPPS, as there is a suitable sport in the community for each and every one of us.

This term, through a Sporting Schools grant, I have Paul Boxall taking the students for lessons. As he has said to all of the students, learning the correct technique right from the beginning helps to develop good habits and skills. With the Year 5 students, the first two lessons, Paul focused on correct stance, holding the club correctly and developing an efficient swing for chipping. The last lesson, Paul introduced a bigger swing and the importance of transfer of weight from one foot to the other.

Golf Australia has a program called MY GOLF. If you and your child are interested in looking further into golf as a sport or hobby, visit the website golf,org.au/mygolf. It provides information on the different types of programs, venues etc.

The Year 6 students will have two lessons with Paul this week and next week.

YEAR 6 BASKETBALL LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIP – FRIDAY 15TH AUGUST

On Friday 2nd September, 32 Year 6 students participated in the Murdoch District Lightning Premiership held at Jubilee Park Stadium. With seven schools making up the district (Baxter, Langwarrin, Langwarrin Park, Pearcedale, Somerville, Somerville Rise and Woodlands), 39 teams played in the tournament, with approximately 180 students in total participating on the day. There were 5 different pools to cater for the all the diverse skills of the students – Mixed Pool A, Mixed Pool B, Mixed Pool C, Girls Pool A and Girls Pool B.

All students behaved well and displayed great sportsperson ship during the games. When not playing, they loved finding out how the other teams were progressing and demonstrated a strong culture of support and encouragement.

We entered a team in each of the Mixed Pool A, B and C and a girl's team in Girls Pool A. All teams had a mix of wins and losses, and whilst none of the teams finished on top, all students had a great day.

Special thank you to Cassie F, Aaron K and Belinda E who volunteered their time to coach one of the teams. Giving up your own personal time to do this was very much appreciated by me, the students and the parents.

ATHLETICS REPORT:

Wow, what a fantastic effort from our students at the district athletics! On Tuesday 9th September, 68 students competed for LPPS in both field and track events. The support the students gave to each other was fantastic. In true Langwarrin Park spirit, all students gave 100% effort and conducted themselves in a manner that the whole school community should be proud of.

We had many students place in the top three in their individual events.  Thirty-eight students placed 1st or 2nd in one or more of their events and as a result will now compete in these events at the Northern Divisional competition the first Wednesday of Term 4.

A big thank you to Mrs Peluso, Ms Wainwright and Mrs Bannan for assisting with officiating duties, supervision and organisation of the students throughout the day. Thank you also to all parents for supporting the students by bringing them to training as well as supporting them on the day.

Congratulations to all the students who were part of the team.
