Reading

In Reading, we have been enjoying our class novel, Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend. Morrigan escapes her cursed life in Jackalfax when Jupiter North takes her to the magical city of Nevermoor. There, she must compete for a place in the prestigious Wundrous Society, facing challenging trials despite not knowing what her special ability might be. Along the way, she makes friends, encounters strange and wonderful creatures, and begins to uncover the mysteries of her new world.

Alongside our novel study, students have been developing their reading fluency, focusing on using appropriate volume and expression to read aloud clearly and confidently. Inspired by Nevermoor, students have also begun writing their own fantasy narratives, creating imaginative settings and characters and using sensory language and show, don’t tell techniques to bring their stories to life.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been exploring the connections between fractions, decimals and percentages. Students have been learning to identify and select strategies to calculate fractions, decimals and percentages of an amount, using multiplication and division to solve problems. They have also been applying these skills to real-life situations, including calculating discounts and working out sale prices. Through these activities, students are building their confidence in choosing efficient strategies and applying their mathematical understanding to a range of problems.

Humanities

In Humanities, we have been exploring Business and Economics, focusing on the difference between needs and wants and why people must make choices when resources are limited. Students have been investigating the concept of opportunity cost, considering what is given up when choosing one option over another. Through real-life examples and discussions, they have been developing their understanding of how people make decisions about spending, saving and using resources.
