Grade 2

Writing

In Writing, Year 2 students have explored narrative and persuasive texts through the story ‘Tiddler’. Students created a character map by developing a description of the main character, as well as actions, words, thoughts and feelings Tiddler felt at the end of the story. We have introduced strong, medium and weak modality words and explored the impact they have on persuading a reader. Students are encouraged to use strong modality words such as must, will and always in their writing. Over the coming weeks, we will explore persuasive writing further.

Literacy

In Grammar, we are learning to use speech marks to show when someone is talking. Students are practising placing speech marks before and after the words a person says and writing sentences that clearly identify who is speaking. In Comprehension, we are focusing on monitoring our understanding as we read. Students are learning to check that what they are reading makes sense and to recognise when they need to stop and think about the text.

In Spelling, we are exploring different spelling patterns that make the /j/ sound, including ‘dge’ and ‘ge’. We are also learning when to use ‘ch’ and ‘tch’ at the end of words by identifying vowel sounds and looking at spelling patterns. Students are also practising reading and spelling words ending in ‘tion’. Throughout these lessons, we are continuing to build our knowledge of tricky words, including interesting, would, wouldn’t, women, laugh and after.
