Photos from our State Cross Country Runners - Hamish, Max and Bryce!
Last Thursday, THREE of our St Joey’s Students who had qualified in cross country from our School Cross Country (top 8) to the district level (top 10) to the division level (top 10) to the region (top 10) and then finally qualifying for the Victorian State Cross Country Championships (top 12). This was held at Yarra Valley Racecourse by School Sport Victoria. Very few schools would have had three representatives, even from the larger government or private schools. We were so proud of each of them. Isabella was an excellent support person for Bryce as well!
Bryce Willcock - 9/10 Year Boys (Multi-Class) (2 km event)
Bryce ran this race in 12 min and 9 seconds finishing 7th. Such a great effort! He had trained so hard and never gives up, even though things are sometimes much harder for him. Bryce is an inspiration to all of us! His sister, Isabella, was an amazing Support Person for Bryce in the State Championships and is always a great support for Bryce in his sporting achievements.
Max Cleary - 11 Year Boys (3 km event)
Last year, Max's highest level reached in school cross country was District Cross Country.
This year, it was a further distance of 3 km instead of 2kms and he made it to a much higher level in making it to the 11-year Boys State Championships and finishing 35th.
We calculated that from a total of around 38,000 boys turning 11 this year across Victoria would have competed from their school cross country onwards to try to make it to States and to finish 35th from that large number is incredible. Wow, what an athlete Max is!
Hamish Murphy - 9/10 Year Boys (2 km event)
Hamish ran in the 9/10 Boys 2 km race in the State Championships finishing 21st out of an estimated 75,000 to 85,000 of all 9- and 10-year-old boys in Victoria. He ran the race in a lightning pace of 7 min 20 sec, that’s less than 4 minutes per kilometre. That’s super quick!!
Training with Max and his dad, Paul, as well as with the local running club of SPAC, Hamish has grown incredibly in his distance running over the past year. We congratulate him on his wonderful achievement and on discovering this newfound talent!
