Vocational Major Students Take on The Big Issue City Search

Our Year 11 and 12 Vocational Major students recently stepped outside the classroom to take part in The Big Issue City Search, an engaging and eye-opening experience organised by Ms Venthan. The interactive challenge took students through Melbourne's CBD, where they completed activities, solved clues and learned about the realities of homelessness and social disadvantage.

The City Search was much more than a scavenger hunt. It encouraged students to develop important life and employability skills including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, navigation and critical thinking. Working together to complete each challenge helped students build confidence while learning to support one another in unfamiliar situations.

The insights gained during the city search challenged common stereotypes and encouraged students to think with greater empathy and understanding.

The experience also highlighted the important work of The Big Issue, which provides opportunities for people experiencing homelessness or disadvantage to earn a legitimate income and rebuild their confidence by selling magazines and accessing support programs. Students gained a deeper appreciation of how social enterprises can create positive change in the community.

Overall, the City Search was a meaningful and memorable learning experience inspiring compassion, resilience and a greater awareness of the challenges faced by vulnerable members of our community.   Well done and thank you to our VM students who participated responsibly and engaged in a thoughtful manner with the activity!
