Our recent incursion with the Balwyn High School Music Group provided a valuable and engaging learning experience for our students.

The Balwyn HS music teachers and student ensemble introduced a range of instruments, allowing students to observe, listen and identify sound sources with increasing accuracy.

Throughout the session, students participated in structured activities focused on maintaining a steady beat, recognising pulse and exploring rhythmic patterns.

They contributed confidently to group music‑making through body percussion and the creation of a simple ostinato, demonstrating growing musical awareness and collaboration.

The visiting students from Balwyn High were patient, encouraging and completely unfazed by the million questions fired at them. It was joyful, noisy, and full of genuine learning; my favourite kind of session.

Students have also been diving into beat and rhythm lately, figuring out how music feels, how to keep a steady pulse, and how rhythm shapes movement. They’ve been putting all of this into practice through some very fun, very dramatic “epic” dance battles. It’s been a great way for them to test out their timing, teamwork, and creativity while having an absolute blast.
