Excursion to Como House and Garden:
On Tuesday 26th May, our students enjoyed an exciting excursion to Como House and Garden in South Yarra. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the beautiful mansion that belonged to the Armytage family, who lived there for almost 100 years.
Throughout the day, students participated in a range of engaging activities that helped bring history to life.
During the House Tour, students learnt about what life was like in the late 1800s and explored how daily life for families in Melbourne has changed over time. Students learnt an old fashioned dance in the Ballroom and practised how to curtsy and bow to a partner. Students were both intrigued and horrified to learn that toilets didn't exist in the 1800s and instead had to use a toilet pan which was emptied by the servants.
In Servants’ Work, students discovered how changing technologies have impacted people’s home and work lives from the 1800s to today. They had a go learning the sounds different bells made and trying to remember which room of the house they belonged to, as it was a job of the servants to hear a bell and know which room it belonged to and why it was being rung. Students also had to learn about how washing was done before washing machines. We were human washing machines, using buckets of soapy water to clean clothes before using a machine to squeeze all the remaining water off them.
Students also had lots of fun participating in Old Fashioned Games including croquet, quoits, skipping and sack races, while learning about how children played in the past.
One of the highlights of the day was the Broken Doll Mystery, where students worked together to solve clues hidden throughout the gardens as part of a historical mystery challenge. Students had to work out who had broken the doll at a party and enjoyed roaming around the gardens to find the clues. The answer to the mystery will be revealed in our F-2 Mini Meet on Friday!
It was a fantastic day of learning, teamwork and fun, and students thoroughly enjoyed stepping back in time to experience life in the 1800s! A huge thank you to the parent volunteers who attended the excursion and assisted during the day, we hope you took lots of ideas for the servant work your children can engage in at home 😂
Grandparents Morning:
We loved welcoming grandparents and special people into our classrooms for Grandparents Morning on Tuesday 19th! Students enjoyed spending time sharing their learning through reading their reader books, playing maths games and showing some of the work they have been working hard on recently.
Thank you to all the grandparents and special people who spent the morning with us. The students had so much fun sharing their classroom and learning with you!
Life Ed:
The Foundation students learnt about friendship. We learnt about how our body language can express different emotions. We practiced how to be a kind listener when friends are talking to us like making sure we are smiling and showing positive body language. Our emotions can have an impact on our friend's emotions.
The Year 1 and 2 students participated in Life Education session where they learnt about ways to keep their bodies healthy and strong. Throughout the session, students explored different body parts including the heart, muscles, lungs and brain, learning about the important jobs they do to help our bodies stay fit and healthy.
Students were very excited to meet Harold the Giraffe, who helped teach them about making healthy choices. Together, they discussed the importance of eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, drinking water, exercising regularly and looking after their bodies every day.
