Term 1 sport is up and running!

Our Aerobics teams have started their trainings. Our Cross Country runners had their first session on Monday morning. The Netball teams hit the courts last Friday night. This week Volleyball begins, followed by Basketball and Cricket next week. Tennis matches have resumed and our private tennis lessons begun this week. It’s great to see so many students getting involved and being active!

The start of the school year is a busy time and thank you to all parents for your quick communication so far as we try to make sure everything is running smoothly.

2024 Sports – Terms 2, 3 and 4

To help with planning ahead, here is an overview of the sporting opportunities coming up in 2024.

Cross Country

Cross Country runs the whole year round. Girls can join the program at any time if they would like to work on their fitness. Training sessions are on Monday mornings. There are several competitions coming up during the year:

  • East Adelaide SAPSASA trials on Friday May 17th at Foxfield Oval
  • Catholic Schools Cross Country Carnival on Wednesday August 7th at CBC, east parklands
  • Weekly inter-school competitions on Wednesday afternoons during Term 2

AFLW

Australian Rules Football was HUGE in Term 4 at Loreto and with the competition growing and AFLW going from strength to strength, IGSSA has decided to expand its competition in 2024. The school football season will now run through Term 2 and Term 3 on Tuesday afternoons, with teams available at Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 levels. In further good news – our teams will wear real football guernseys this year rather than PE polos.

Soccer

Soccer will run through Terms 2 and 3 on Friday afternoons. There are Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 age groups available.

Hockey

Year 3/4 competition available in Term 2 and Year 5/6 competition available in Term 3. Matches are played on Friday afternoons at Adelaide Hockey Club.

Basketball

This sport is available all year round, with matches on Wednesday afternoons at Wayville Sports Stadium. Available for students in Years 3-6.

Volleyball

This sport is available all year round, with matches on Friday afternoons at Unley Life Be In It. Available for students in Years 4-6.

Cricket

Cricket will crank up again in Term 4 with teams for Year 2/3/4 (Saturday morning) and Year 5/6 (Wednesday afternoon).

Netball

The most popular sport in Australia! Netball at Loreto runs for 12 months of the year:

  • Winter Netball
    • Year 3/4/5/6 students will have the chance to play for Loreto teams in the Eastern District Netball Association
    • Matches are on Saturday lunchtime/afternoons
    • We will be holding trials towards the end of Term 1 for our winter teams
  • Summer Netball 2024-25
    • Loreto will also enter teams in the summer competition which begins in October and continues through until March 2025
    • Matches are on Friday evenings
    • Current Year 2 students will have the chance to enter the “Netta” competition in Term 4

Athletics

Our own Loreto Little Athletics program will launch on Thursday afternoons with an autumn and a spring season.

As well as the school’s Athletics Carnival, there are two big athletics events during the year:

  • East Adelaide SAPSASA trials on Friday August 23rd at Bridgestone Stadium
    • Last year we had a number of girls qualify to represent East Adelaide at the State Carnival
  • Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival on Thursday October 31st at SA Athletics Stadium
    • Our girls performed brilliantly last year to finish as runners up in Group 1. Can we go one better in 2024?

Touch Football

We will again compete in the Catholic Schools carnival in Term 3, with teams entered at Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 level. However, in 2024 students will also have the chance to play in a weekly competition against other schools. This new competition will run on Tuesday afternoons in Term 4. Our teams absolutely BLITZED at last year’s Catholic Schools carnival, with several teams going undefeated throughout. It’s great that the girls will get a chance to play more matches this year and continue to develop their skills.

Tennis

Private lessons will continue to be available all year round through the Todd Perry Tennis Academy:

  • Reception to Year 3 on Wednesday afternoons in the gym
  • Year 4 to Year 6 at Friday lunchtime on the junior school courts

For those ready to play real matches, we have teams entered in Saturday morning competitions through Rostrevor Tennis Club:

  • Winter season (Terms 2 and 3)
  • Summer season (Term 4 2024 and Term 1 2025)

Rowing

There is a “Come and Try Rowing Program” for Year 6 students in Term 4 to see if rowing is a sport you would be keen to pursue in middle and senior school.

Swimming

This term we will be holding swimming trials for Year 2-6 students followed by the Year 4-6 Swimming Carnival and the Year 2-3 Swimming Carnival.

During the year there are two big swimming events we are involved in:

  • East Adelaide SAPSASA trials on Tuesday March 5th
  • Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival on Monday March 25th

Times from our trials and from our carnivals will be used to select students to represent Loreto in these events.

Nominations for winter sport will go out midway through Term 1.

If you have any questions about junior school sport, please contact Ben at Ben.Johnswood@loreto.sa.edu.au.

Student Achievements and Performances

If your daughter is involved in a sport or activity outside of Loreto that you would like to share, please send details through to Ben.Johnswood@loreto.sa.edu.au.

This could be club sport or dance, calisthenics, gymnastics, swimming, chess, surf lifesaving, horse riding, athletics, surfing, cycling, skateboarding, taekwondo, Lego building… basically any activity you can think of! We would love to be able to recognise their performances in our newsletter. It’s also great for other girls to see all the different activities that are out there and they might see something they’d like to try.
