Learning Across the ELC

Learning in the Preschool

We have had a fabulous start to the year in Preschool, supporting the new dynamics of children and teaching teams by unpacking our Preschool responsibilities; Kindness, Safety and Respect. The new preschool children have been engaging in all the new spaces, resources, specialist classes and routines as they build their sense of belonging to Preschool. Our pretend play areas have been a hive of activity, with a bakery in Preschool Gold and a café in Preschool Blue. These spaces are ever changing as the children add their drawings and writing to displays and make menus, as well as creatively constructing food elements. All the preschool children have been listening to songs and stories about kindness in our group times, sharing their thoughts and using kindness to develop relationships using manners play out in our café and bakery too. We have also started noticing some similarities and differences in ourselves and our environments, as part of our 'Same, Different, Unique' inquiry.

The children have been embracing the AusLan signs for same and different. So far our inquiry has lead to measuring our heights and length of feet and exploring the shapes and colours of facial features and body parts. They have been comparing the letters in their names and discovered that many children have an 'A' 'a' somewhere in their first, middle or surname. Children have noticed that rhyming words sound a bit the same too. In our Yarning times, children have been drawing faces/people based on their knowledge of similar features, as well as tallying features to discover what can be considered 'unique' in our classroom, like curly hair and glasses.
