Year Eleven Parents
A reminder to Year Eleven parents that the 2027 Student Leaders will be announced at the Assembly in Week Nine on Monday 14 September. We will email students on Friday afternoon, 11 September.
Please feel most welcome to attend the Assembly, which will be held from 10.15am to 10.55am in the Gym. The Student Leaders will be announced, and the bagpipes will play!
Kingfisher Concert
I am very much looking forward to the Kingfisher Concert at Albany Entertainment Centre tonight! Our music students and staff have been working so hard in the lead-up to these performances and a huge congratulations and good luck to them all!
Kingfisher Fair and Open Day
We look forward to seeing you on campus this weekend at the Kingfisher Fair and Open Day on Sunday!
A lot of work has gone into preparing our school for visitors. Our Heads of Learning Area (HOLAs), alongside our classroom teachers, have put together displays showcasing the wonderful learning that takes place in our classrooms, and there are plenty of fun activities to enjoy as we celebrate our school community.
I'm looking forward to getting some Griffins merchandise!

Radio Active
Student Reflection
Radio Active was an incredibly enjoyable and valuable experience for all of us involved in VET Music. In the lead-up to the event, we spent weeks in the classroom rehearsing and preparing our performances, which involved playing the same four songs over and over again. By the end of the term, I think it's safe to say we all knew every song inside out and back to front and probably didn't need to hear them again for a long time. However, all the hard work definitely paid off, and after a term of putting up with us, Mr Fowler had somehow managed to get us sounding pretty good.
Backstage, everyone was buzzing with anticipation and nerves, with a cacophony of saxophones and trumpets adding to the atmosphere, accompanied by vocal warm-ups and some last-minute dance moves. Most prominent were the Year Twelve vocalists performing Somebody to Love by Queen, who made it their personal mission to serenade everyone with their incredible harmonies. It's safe to say peeing in silence was out of the question!
Everyone looked incredible in their outfits, and it was so much fun hanging out with my friends and jamming out to all the amazing music being performed throughout the night. One of the highlights of the experience was having the opportunity to work alongside the WAAPA students. It was really inspiring to see their passion, talent and dedication to music, and it showed me that music doesn't just have to be something you do for fun; you can make a career out of it.
A big thank you to Mr Fowler, Ms Luxton and all the WAAPA students for coming down and making this opportunity possible. I really enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend VET Music and opportunities like Radio Active to any students considering taking the subject next year.

Young Writers
Author: Mabel Gibson
On Tuesday and Wednesday this week students from Years Six to Ten attended workshops hosted by The Literature Centre at the Albany Town Library. GSG joined other local schools to work with an emerging author Mabel Gibson, a Yamatji woman, who completed most of her growing up and schooling in Albany. She spent time during the workshops sharing her experiences of school, how she became a writer, and shared with the students her stories and micro memories.

Student Reflection
On Tuesday 8 September I participated in The Literature Centre’s Young Writers’ Program at the Town Library. Our workshop was about how to write micro memoirs with Mabel Gibson, the author of the day.
Mabel started off by telling us about her family because that’s what she mostly writes about in her book Crybaby. Next, she got us to do an activity where we had to write a micro memoir about a memory with a strong emotion; you were able to read yours to the group if you wanted to.
After a recess break, we learnt about how she became an author and how her book was published and what made it happen. Then Mabel read us some of her memoirs from her book and then it was our turn to write one of our own. Next, we focused on editing, and Mabel taught us how she edited her work; we all tried it out with our own work.
After lunch Mabel read us the introduction to her book then we all had to write one to either our own memoir or a book we might want to write one day. By the time everyone had finished it was time to go and all the Grammar kids had a photo with Mabel.
Huge thanks to Mrs Bradbury, the supervisor for the day and of course Mabel Gibson for coming in and sharing. We had an awesome day!

R U OK Day
On Wednesday 9 September, we celebrated R U OK? Day. R U OK Day is all about checking in with your friends and family and asking the simple question, “are you okay?”. A small question can change someone's life and support them during tough times.
This year to celebrate R U OK? Day, the Student Representative Council (SRC) organised a cake stall and games to encourage everyone to take the time to take a break.
This year, the SRC decided to raise money for the Hawaiian Ride for Youth. Every year dozens of riders cycle from Albany to Perth, raising money for youth mental health. Since they began in 2003, they have raised nearly $38 million. This year we have raised over $300 for the Hawaiian Ride for Youth, supporting youth mental health organisations in WA. Thank you everyone for supporting this amazing cause.

Final Call: 2027 Paris Tour Expression of Interest
Expressions of interest close this Thursday 10 September 2026. This is the final opportunity to register your interest in the tour.
We are now looking to offer this Tour in September/October of 2027 during the Term Three holidays. The Paris Tour would be for 10 days and is offered to students enrolled in Years Ten, Eleven and Twelve, 2027.

There will be an information session on Monday 21 September at 5.00pm in the school Library. Please note that priority placements will be offered to students who had expressed interest in the Paris Tour earlier this year.
