Year 1 News

We’ve had another busy week in Year 1, and our learning spaces have been full of enthusiasm, curiosity and collaboration!
As people of faith, we have been finding out about Mary, our Mother, as October is traditionally the Month of the Holy Rosary in the Catholic Church. As researchers, we explored the Rosary and learnt about the meaning of the beads and how they help guide us as we pray. We discovered how the different beads and prayers are used to help us reflect on important events in Mary and Jesus’ lives, and how praying the Rosary brings us closer to Mary, Jesus and God. We also had time and opportunity to practise praying the Rosary together.
We also celebrated Socktober! We wore bright, fun socks, to raise awareness and funds for children and communities around the world facing poverty, lack of education, food insecurity, and homelessness.
As inquirers, we began exploring the history of our wonderful school as we prepare to celebrate St Fidelis’ 100th birthday next year! We tuned in by unpacking what the past means and discussing different types of artefacts. As researchers and collaborators, we worked in small mixed groups with Foundation and Year 2 students to investigate a range of objects from St Fidelis’ past. These included photographs of school buildings, students and staff, workbooks, certificates, uniforms, sports memorabilia, teacher planners and resources, technology, and much more! As thinkers, we shared our observations and initial wonderings within our groups, recording them along the way. We then had time to revisit the photographs and artefacts, taking a closer look before recording our thoughts and wonderings.
As mathematicians, we tuned in to the concept of Time and began exploring digital and analogue clocks. We identified the features of a clock and explored the role of the hour and minute hands when reading and recognising o’clock times. We made our thinking visible by making and recording different times to the hour on mini clocks.
