Chess Competition

On the 4th of August, Glen Innes High School sent 15 students to Glen Innes Public School’s library for the inter-school chess competition, competing against Glen Innes Public School and Emmaville Central School. In total, 32 students from Year 2 to Year 10 took part.

The day began with a casual play and tutoring session until recess, where great mentorship was shown, significantly lifting the overall standard of play. After recess, the Swiss Chess competition commenced, with four rounds played. By the end, only two players remained undefeated — Year 10 student Leopold Eastwood from Glen Innes High, and Year 6 student Ariki Woller from Glen Innes Public. After a tense final match, Leopold secured the championship title, remaining undefeated.

Gus Rossington-Taylor received the coveted 3D-printed chessboard for his commendable sportsmanship and patience while tutoring younger students. Xavier Mitton was acknowledged with an award for his ongoing mentorship and willingness to share his love of the game.

The day was a wonderful display of sportsmanship, strategic thinking, and school spirit. It concluded with students reflecting on each other’s contributions, leaving staff impressed by the camaraderie and positive atmosphere. Congratulations to all participants for representing their schools with pride.
