Last week our Year 5 & 6 students were in Melbourne, and everyone had a fantastic time. The days were packed and some late nights were had, but it was all worth it. There were a lot of firsts in regard to public transport. First time on the tram and train. By the end of the week, everyone knew the etiquette and looked like seasoned users, boarding, tapping on and disembarking with ease.

Each of the students were asked to reflect on their favourite moment from the week and shared them at Assembly on Monday. It was a challenge to narrow it down to one, however this is what they each came up with.

Delilah: My favourite thing about urban camp was the dinners, my favourite dinner was the Italian night when we had bolognaise.

Cody: Science works, because we could see the planets and stars in the planetarium.

Campbell: Social Fair I really liked all the rock climbing we got to do and playing tag in the play centre.

Tom: Skydeck, because we got to go on the edge where Archie was really scared and screamed the whole time.

Harrison: MSAC (Melbourne Sports & Aquatics Centre), because we got to go on the diving boards and in the wave pool.

Archie: MSAC, because I got to go on a diving board for the first time.

Alyson: Social Fair and MSAC, MSAC because I learnt a lot and it was fun. Social fair because we did rock climbing and ran around in the play centre.

Noah: Social Fair, because we got to climb and run around the playground.

Eli: Arts centre, because we got to make music and use DJ equipment, but not Ice Skating, because I fell over.

Wally: Social Fair, because it was fun to jump off the walls after you climbed.

Don: Social Fair, because we got to play tiggy in the playground.

The students were wonderful all week and were complimented on how good they were on many occasions. I thank them for being so great and congratulate their parents on raising such wonderful children.

A big thank you goes to Matt McGurk for accompanying us on the camp. We really appreciate you giving up your time.

Star Students

Years 1 & 2: Leo: for always displaying a positive attitude to learning.

Foundation: Scarlett: for her fantastic work reading sentences.

Ryan: for working well with converting between units of measurement

SWPBS Award:

All the Year 5 and 6 students, Cody, Don, Alyson, Eli, Noah, Delilah, Wally, Tom, Campbell, Archie and Harrison, for the value of respect, by listening to all teachers, volunteers and guides and following instructions whilst on camp.

Reading Nights:

25 nights: Leo and Charlie Les.

50 nights: Tyson and Archie.

75 nights: Harry S, Harry C, Olive, Tully and Sophie.

100 nights: Chloe, Audrey, Renee, Oli and Wally.

The first to reach the 125-night milestone for this year is Maisie.

Reading is a great thing to do on a cold winter’s day, so keep notching up the tally over the holidays everyone.

Other Certificates:

A number of students scored 100% on their Patterns and Algebra test, they were, Molly, Ned, Maisie and Peggy. Well done to these students, this will certainly put you in good stead for future mathematics.

Book Recommendation:

Sophie recommended Michelle Payne’s, ‘. Ride On’.

The book contains information, graphics and adventures. It is set around race courses, the Melbourne Cup race, hospital, her home in Ballarat and the family horse stables. Michelle, her twin brother Stevie and the rest of her family are the main characters in the book.

Michelle began her jockey journey at the age of 15 in Ballarat. Michelle won the Melbourne Cup in 2015 at the age of 30. She was the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. She had to find courage, resilience and determination to overcome injuries and many tough times in life.

Sophie recommended the book to those in years 3 to 8, but I believe it would be a great read for anyone in years 3 and up.

Slinky Fun

One of the benefits of being an F-12 school is the older students spending time with the younger students. Heidi shared some ‘slinky’ tricks with the younger students during lunchtime.
