For the second year running, MCC's primary soccer team travelled to Swan Hill to represent Sunraysia South at the LMR tournament. There were three pool matches to play with the winner of the group progressing to the final.
The first match against St Francis OTF was evenly poised initially, before some defensive structural issues were exploited, handing St Francis the lead. MCC was able to equalise, but fell behind to a second goal. Knowing that an early loss would threaten our hopes of progressing, MCC pressed for an equaliser in the second half but after several chances were caught out in a counter attack, conceding the goal that confirmed the final 1-3 scoreline.
Some defensive adjustments for match 2 against Taradale/Winter's Flat led to a dominant outing against a skilled team, with MCC securing a 2-0 victory.
Only a win could preserve our chances of progress in the final pool match against St Mary's Swan Hill, the weakest team in the pool. An odd defensive lapse led to a surprise early deficit. MCC were thoroughly in control of possession, and soon equalised. Despite dominating the remainder of the game and enjoying golden chances to take the lead, St Mary's held on for a draw, leaving our team with a record of 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss, bowing out by finishing second in the pool of four.
Thank you to the parents who made the long drive to support the team. Congratulations to the team for reaching region level again and for their efforts in Swan Hill!
