Physical Education - Term 3 Wrap Up

Better Health Guidelines for Children (Dept of Health, Disability & Ageing)
For optimal health benefits, children and young people (aged 5–17 years) should achieve the recommended balance of high levels of physical activity, low levels of sedentary behaviour, and sufficient sleep each day. A healthy 24 hours includes:
- Accumulating 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day involving mainly aerobic activities;
- Several hours of a variety of light physical activities;
- Limiting sedentary recreational screen time to no more than 2 hours per day;
- Breaking up long periods of sitting as often as possible;
- An uninterrupted 9 to 11 hours of sleep per night for those aged 5–13 years and 8 to 10 hours per night for those aged 14–17 years; and
- Consistent bed and wake-up times.
Activities that are vigorous, as well as those that strengthen muscle and bone should be incorporated at least 3 days per week.
For greater health benefits, replace sedentary time with additional moderate to vigorous physical activity, while preserving sufficient sleep.

Interschool Sports
PDPSSA District Basketball
Our Grade 5/6 students that were successful at basketball trials attended the PDPSSA District Basketball competition at Darebin Sports Community Centre last Tuesday. It was the first time in many years that all schools in the district were able to attend. With the competition level high, students found a lot of success with both our boys and girls teams making the grand finals both against Preston West PS. The boys won the final by one point in an absolute thriller down to the final seconds. The girls played hard but lost in the final being down a few players to injury. Fred ML was named the finals MVP for the boys competition. The boys will continue on to divisional finals in Term 4.
Vic State Hockey Finals
Well done to our girl’s hockey team for making it through to the Vic State Hockey Finals at Footscray Hockey Club. The girls went into the competition undefeated and confidence levels high but immediately knew they were facing some tough competition. The girls came away in fifth place, and it was a great experience at that level.
Darebin Divisional Athletics
Last week our students attended the Darebin Divisional Athletics Finals which was held at Meadowglen International Athletics Track. Initially the wet weather halted events and conditions were tricky. The sun eventually came out and the students had a great time.
Well done to Rosie M (100m), Owen M (shot put), William E (long jump), Ava G (discus), Maddie M (long jump) and the girls 9/10 4x100m relay team who will move onto the NMR Regional Athletics Finals in Term 4. Good luck to those students.
First Aid in Schools
This week, all of our students were privileged enough to have St Johns Ambulance educators attend the school and deliver age-appropriate first aid sessions. This is vital information which hopefully students will not need to use in their lifetime but will be confident enough to use in case on an incident. To help consolidate the learning experience, please ask your child about the sessions and what they had learnt, role play if needed and stay safe!
Thank You, Volunteers!
A big shout out to all our volunteers. Without you, our students would not have the great experience they do without your support. In whatever context you have assisted, it makes a big difference and takes the pressure off our staff and events to run as smoothly as possible. Thank you so much, you are appreciated!
We hope you all have a great break and see you in Term 4.
