Success at the Prime Lamb Competition

During the final week of term 1, the proficient and enthusiastic Agriculture Show Team participated in the annual Prime Lamb Competition held by McIntyre High School at the Inverell Showgrounds.This prominent event, attended by over 200 students and featuring 100+ competing lambs this year, marked a significant occasion.

Throughout the term, students diligently trained the lambs for presentation and diligently monitored their growth rates. Guyra Central School impressively entered 10 lambs across the heavy weight, medium weight, and led lamb categories. Furthermore, students engaged in the junior judging competition, where Lincoln Brown notably secured first place in the senior judging category. Lincoln's articulate performance in the final round, accurately placing the lambs, deserves commendation. Congratulations to Lincoln for his notable success in the judging arena!

The heavyweight lamb pen, generously contributed by Gina and Warren Lockyer, attained third place in the live judging. Subsequently, they excelled in the carcass evaluation, clinching the champion pen of lambs title and the overall heavyweight class championship. This achievement stands as a testament to their hard work and dedication. Gratitude is extended to the Lockyer family for their unwavering support and generosity towards the school. Special appreciation goes to Mrs Gwyn Pearson for her exceptional guidance and support of the students during the event and its preparation, as well as to Mrs Linley Ryan for her assistance and transportation on the day of the competition at Inverell.

McLean Care ANZAC Day Service

On April 24th, members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) participated in an ANZAC Day service held at the Kolora/McLean Aged Care facility in Guyra. During the service, students delivered citations and prayers while presenting residents with Roses and Rosemary posies as tokens of remembrance. The Roses, a gracious donation from June and Neil of "Juneils" Cafe, were warmly received by the residents. Special acknowledgment is due to Trisha Varley, Annabelle Collons, Treigh Bonser-Karhu, Kate O’Kane, and Archie Jackson for dedicating their holiday time to engage in this meaningful service.

Early Stage 1 Sloths

Kindy have been studying the book 'The Potato People'. It is about a Grandma and her grandson making people out of potatoes. They then plant them and lots of new potatoes grow. We have learnt some new Vocabulary words such as 'droopy' and 'explained'. On Friday, we made our own potato people out of potatoes with eyes, a mouth, arms, legs and hair. We are looking forward to watching them 'droop' and then perhaps plant them in our own gardens. at home. They had a great time and enjoyed showing off their 'Potato People' around the school.

Secondary Cross Country

Guyra Central School hosted its annual Secondary Cross Country event on Wednesday 1 May 2024, at the Guyra Golf Course. This year, student participation was notably high, contributing to an enjoyable experience for all involved. As a highlight of the event, the traditional King and Queen of the sprint (awarded to the fastest participants in the initial 100m race) and King and Queen of the Hill (presented to the first individuals to conquer the prominent hill on the golf course) were prominent features of the Cross Country event. We extend congratulations to Eli McGinty and Mackayla Galindo, who secured the titles of 2024 King and Queen of the sprint, and to Jake Beard and Hayley Williams/Karleah Alefosio, who claimed the honors of 2024 King and Queen of the Hill.

Mothers Day Pamper Session

Mother's Day serves as a poignant occasion to celebrate the profound connection between mothers and their children, acknowledging the lasting impact and selfless sacrifices made by our mothers, grandmothers, and other influential women. This day is dedicated to expressing appreciation and admiration for the women who hold an invaluable place in our lives.

What better way to show love and gratitude than by providing a pampering experience for these remarkable individuals?

Our esteemed guests enjoyed a delightful morning tea, complemented by luxurious manicures, pedicures, and massages, creating a memorable experience for both our guests and students.

Primary Athletics Carnival

Guyra Central School celebrated its annual Primary Athletics Carnival with great enthusiasm and spirit. Students enthusiastically participated in various events, displaying remarkable dedication to earn points for their respective sporting houses. The highlight of the day was the thrilling relay races, which included 2 special relay teams comprising teachers and parents, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the day. Gratitude is extended to the parents and teachers who actively engaged in this event. Noteworthy achievements were recognized with Brax Hutton and Rose Gordon named Senior Boy and Girl Champions, Jake Artz and Jessica Fletcher as 11-year Boy and Girl Champions, and Ashton Hutton and Indigo Atkin emerging as Junior Boy and Girl Champions for 2024. Congratulations to all the winners on their remarkable accomplishments. Malpas emerged as the triumphant house in this year's athletics carnival.

Infants Mini Athletics Carnival

Infant students engaged in a miniature Athletics carnival, emphasising inclusivity where every participant is celebrated. The event featured their inaugural 100m sprint, complemented by engaging activities like sack races, fostering a joyous and memorable experience for the young participants.

Primary Gardens

Throughout 2024, primary students have diligently tended to our garden in the primary quad. We have consistently harvested fresh produce from the garden to prepare meals with Bec. Students enjoy cooking frittatas and cookies to distribute among their peers. They take pride in their homegrown produce and the delicious treats they create in the kitchen to share with others.

Stage 3 - Learn the vital skill of CPR

Stage 3 received accolades from Royal Life Saving Australia for their exemplary conduct and active participation in the NSW CPR Program held at Guyra Central School. During this informative session, students dedicated an hour to mastering crucial CPR techniques, understanding their potential to save lives. Cameron from Royal Lifesaving Australia commended the students for their high level of engagement and enthusiasm for learning. He noted their attentive demeanor during the instructional phase and their proactive involvement in hands-on practice with Resusci Anne and Resusci Infant Annie.

We extend our congratulations to Stage 3 for not only leaving a positive impression on our distinguished guest but also for embodying the values of Pride, Respect, and Responsibility that represent our school. Stage 3's commitment to acquiring this vital life skill is commendable.

Love Bites Program presented by ALACT

Our Year 11 students had the opportunity to take part in the ‘Love Bites Program’ presented by ALACT and funded by the NSW Government. This program focuses on fostering positive relationships among young people, promoting respect for all individuals, and equipping them with the skills needed to establish healthy connections. It also aims to prepare them to navigate relationship challenges by fostering problem-solving skills that do not involve violence. The program provides a safe environment for our students to engage in discussions about their rights and responsibilities in relationships and how to cultivate healthy connections.

Upon completing the course on Thursday, May 23, 2024, our Year 11 students gained a deeper understanding of identifying signs of unhealthy or abusive relationships. They now feel more empowered to recognise the characteristics of a healthy relationship and know where to seek help for themselves or friends in need of support. The students left ALACT (Love Bites presenters) with a profound question:

'How do we know what is wrong if we don’t know what is right?'

The Cow that Laid an Egg

Just when we believed Early Stage 1 Sloths couldn't up their cuteness game any further! Picture this: "Moo, Moo" echoing through the corridors at Guyra Central School as the Sloths paraded to read Mrs Nicholson a hilariously special book titled 'The Cow That Laid an Egg'. These little bookworms have been diving into this story all term, even crafting some udderly adorable cow masks along the way!

Primary Armidale Zone Cross Country

Guyra Central School's primary students who qualified attended the Armidale zone Primary Cross Country on a lovely Autumn day, Friday 24 May 2024, at Sport UNE. They represented the school with pride, showing great effort in their respective age categories. The students achieved impressive results, with Ashton Hutton (2nd), Charles Gordon (6th), Indigo-Grace Atkin (5th), Elsie Post (9th-Reserve), Brax Hutton (2nd) and Rose Gordon (2nd) qualifying for the North West Cross Country trial in Coolah on 13th June 2024. Best of luck to all the qualifiers from Guyra Central School at the upcoming event.

The Great Amazing Race

At Guyra Central School, extraordinary events unfold during weeks 5 and 10 of each academic term. Students exemplifying 'Positive Behaviour for Learning' are rewarded with unique opportunities. On Thursday 31 May 2024 our exceptional students participated in 'The Great Amazing Race'. Throughout the session, they embraced and conquered engaging challenges, fostering an atmosphere filled with laughter and camaraderie. Our exceptional students are applauded for their exemplary behaviour and commitment to their learning throughout the start of term 2.

Reconciliation Week

Week 5 marks Reconciliation Week at Guyra Central School, where students are participating in various classroom activities to delve into the theme of 'Now more than ever'. It's a chance for the school community to understand shared histories, cultures, and accomplishments, and to contemplate how each individual can contribute to reconciliation in Australia. Special thanks go to Euncie Blair and Tremane Patterson for coordinating the engaging activities during Reconciliation Week.

Mr. Tremane Patterson, the Aboriginal Education Officer at Guyra Central School, worked in conjunction with Guyra Pre School and Long Day Care Centre to assist their Reconciliation Week activities at the Federation Viewing Platform, South Guyra. At the event, Tremane performed a Reconciliation Week acknowledgment in the traditional Kamilaroi language. Following this, elder Mrs. Nellie Blair shared a traditional story with the children, and Tremane sang 'Hello Friends' in Kamilaroi. The collaboration with Guyra Pre School and Long Day Care Centre provided Guyra Central School with a valuable opportunity to engage with the children, fostering a promising partnership that they aim to cultivate further in the days ahead.

Guyra Central School's Biggest Morning Tea

Congratulations to the students, staff, and school community of Guyra Central School for their participation in Guyra Central Schools' 'Biggest Morning Tea' organised by our Secondary Student Representative Council (SRC). A big thank you goes to Mrs. Rebecca Smith and her SRC team, along with their families, for their efforts in baking and donating scones, pancakes, slices, and cakes, making the event a great success.

In total, our school raised an impressive $608.55 from coffee orders, cake and slice sales, and contributions from our school community. This amount will be donated to Australia's Biggest Morning Tea by the Cancer Council. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who played a part in making this event a resounding success!

Kamilaroi Counting 1-10

Stage 5 Aboriginal Studies students have been studying the Kamilaroi language with Tremane Patterson, our Aboriginal Education Officer (AEO). They utilised their knowledge to teach the Stage 1 students how to sing and learn the 'Kamilaroi numbers 1-10', guided by our excellent secondary teacher, Jess Wright. This was an amazing experience for the Stage 1 students, and the Stage 5 students did a fantastic job mentoring the younger ones in learning traditional Kamilaroi language.

Secondary Volleyball

Our secondary department's GCS Volleyball team participated in the CHSSA Volleyball Knockouts, with Aidan Brown, Ed Collins, Liam McCann, Christian Loeb, Robert Ashman, and Seth Bennett representing Guyra in Armidale at the CHS Volleyball competition. Despite being younger and less experienced than the other teams, they managed to tie for second place in their pool by defeating Glen Innes. Since the top two teams from each pool advanced to the semi-finals, they faced Glen Innes again in a deciding match (first to 11 points) to determine the final spot. The match was tied at 10 points each, but unfortunately, Glen Innes scored the final point, securing their spot in the semi-finals. Congratulations to our volleyball team for their incredible achievement in this competition!

In our secondary classrooms

C02 cars

In a recent Technology class, Mr Goodwin-Hills year 7 students were tasked with designing and building their own CO2 cars. These cars were equipped with a CO2 canister that propelled them to cover a distance of 20 meters in approximately 1 second. Mr Dave Richardson provided significant assistance throughout the project, although one of his own cars broke upon impact. Notably, Issy Purvis created the fastest car of the day, achieving a time of 1:053 seconds.

Stage 4 science

During Stage 4 science, students undertook an assessment task that required them to construct a model of a plant or animal cell. The students enthusiastically embraced the challenge and produced remarkable 3D plant cell models. Here are some of the impressive projects from Mr Uvi's and Mr Goodwin-Hills' classes.

PSSA/CHSSA North West Cross Country Trial

Guyra Central School was represented by 5 primary students and 3 secondary students at the PSSA/CHSSA North West Cross Country trial in Coolah on Thursday, June 13, 2024. All students who participated achieved excellent results in their respective age groups and should feel proud of their accomplishments. Lincoln Atkin secured a spot in the NSW CHSSA Cross Country Championships in Term 3 by finishing 4th in his age category. Aidan Brown finished his race as a reserve runner for the NSW State Championships. Aidan has now been confirmed as the sixth runner for the North West team.

Congratulations to all the students who participated, and best of luck to Lincoln and Aidan in the upcoming event.

Project - Yarning Circle

Guyra Central School has undertaken a special project to transform our former ‘Nature Area’ into an innovative ‘Yarning Circle’ for our students and school community. An initiative led by Eunice Blair and Tremane Patterson, this project has been ongoing for several months. The finishing touches are being made, with our secondary students collaborating with Eunice, Tremane, and Mr. Mark Gordon to create the outdoor furniture for this unique space. We eagerly anticipate the completion of our ‘Yarning Circle’ and look forward to our students and school community benefiting from this area.

CHSSA Central Schools State Knockout Competition

Our secondary 16s Touch team excelled during the recent Central School's State Touch Competition in Inverell last Wednesday. The team secured victories against Ashford Central School and Woodenbong Central School. Despite a challenging match against Uralla Central School, which ended in a defeat, the team showcased remarkable competitiveness, ending in a closely contested game. Securing the 2nd position in our pool, we advanced to the finals where we faced Bundarra Central School, the winners of the other pool. This decisive match determined the qualifying team for the state finals in Dubbo. The team demonstrated exceptional performance, resulting in a 3-3 tie at full time. Subsequently, the team engaged in a 'drop-off' scenario, where each minute without a score led to a player leaving the field until a winning try was scored. Despite the efforts put forth, Bundarra emerged victorious during the drop-off, securing the win. The commendable sportsmanship and skill displayed by our Touch team throughout the day deserves recognition. Congratulations to our Touch team.

CHSSA Tennis

In the CHSSA State Knockout Boys Tennis competition, Guyra triumphed over Glen Innes and Moree, securing a spot in the regional finals against Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School. The regional finals took place at the Guyra Tennis Courts on Thursday, June 13, 2024. Despite a valiant effort in closely contested matches, Farrer's team showcased superior depth, clinching victory over Guyra Central School. Congratulations on reaching the Regional Finals.

In the CHSSA State Knockout Girls Tennis event, Guyra Central School competed in round 2 at the Guyra Tennis Courts against Moree Secondary College. The team faced off against more experienced opponents and, after a hard-fought competition, were defeated 5 sets to 3. The event provided a great learning experience, and it is hoped that the girls will be motivated to train diligently for future competitions.

Regional AECG Meeting

On the 17th of May, Guyra Central School hosted the Regional AECG meeting in the primary staff room. Linjarra West delivered a wonderful Welcome to Country in the local language. Each AECG representative presented updates on the activities within their schools and communities and discussed them within the group. The AECG President provided a report on any emerging issues or resolved matters for further discussion. This gathering also allowed us to interact with other representatives, fostering stronger connections and relationships within our AECG area. Additionally, the Guyra Central School year 11 hospitality students prepared a delightful spread for the meeting.

The next AECG meeting will be held at Black Mountain School at 4.00pm on Thursday 20 June 2024.

Premiers Spelling Bee

Every year, Guyra Central School joins the Premier's Spelling Bee, a statewide inter-school competition. While only stage 2 and stage 3 students officially participate in the competition, all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 had the chance to join in on their individual stage Spelling Bee on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

Early Stage 1 Sloths kicked off the event, impressing their older peers with their ability to sound out words. It was their first time participating, and they all did an outstanding job enunciating clearly. Aria Vidler spelled the most words correctly, with Jayda Franey close behind, both using letter names to spell each word.

Next up were Stage 1 students for their spelling challenge, and they all made valiant attempts at spelling some challenging words. Edward Stevens and Isla Lenehan emerged as the winners of the in-school Stage 1 Spelling Bee.

Moving on to the official Premier's Bee, Stage 2 students were enthusiastic to compete. Each student gave their best effort, carefully sounding out and spelling words to progress to the next level. Ivy-Rose Brazier won the competition, with William Stevens as the runner-up. Congratulations to all Stage 2 participants.

Stage 3 students were the final contenders vying for a spot in the Premiers Spelling Bee regional finals, with a high number of participants. The competition was intense, leading to a spell-off with five students in the final stages. Charlotte Auld emerged as the Stage 3 winner, followed closely by Sophie Rumbel as the runner-up.

These students have qualified to compete in the Regional finals of the Premier's Spelling Bee during Term 3.

DeadlyScience STEM Program

In week 10, stage 3 students will engage in a STEM session facilitated by DeadlyScience. This not-for-profit organisation offers STEM resources and educational opportunities to schools in regional and remote areas across Australia. The primary department received a generous donation of $1000 worth of STEM resources from DeadlyScience Australia. We are eagerly anticipating their visit to our school to experience their STEM program.

From the Mountain to the Sea

During Week 7, students in years 9-11 studying Agriculture enjoyed an exciting excursion, ‘From the Mountain to the Sea.’ The day began at Guyra Central School, where they visited Dutton’s Trout hatchery near Point Lookout. Students had a fascinating morning learning about trout, including stripping roe eggs from pregnant trout and fertilizing them. They gained insights into the trout life cycle and successful trout rearing, making it a memorable experience for all.

Later on, the group proceeded to Ebor Falls and then to Dorrigo, where they were joined by Mr. Josh Leupins, a teacher from Dorrigo High School, along with students from the Dorrigo 9/10 Agriculture class. Together, they visited the largest dairy farm in Dorrigo before returning to Dorrigo High School for the evening. The following day, they visited Sandy Morgan at her Simmental Stud, enjoying a scrumptious breakfast and learning about Simmental Bulls. They then visited the Urunga Bee Farm to learn about the Varroa mite and taste various types of honey. The day concluded with a Plantation tour at the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour, delving into the history and processing of bananas in Coffs. The group returned to Dorrigo to gather their belongings and head back home.

Such enriching excursions are made possible through the support of parents and staff. Gratitude is extended to the hosts for sharing their knowledge and experiences with the students throughout the tour. Special thanks to Mrs Tammy Cameron, Principal of Dorrigo High School, and Mr Josh Leupins, the Agriculture teacher, for their warm hospitality. Appreciation also goes to Mrs Gwyneth Pearson and Mrs Rebecca Smith for their dedication to the students and to all the outstanding students who participated in this memorable trip.

Harry Purvis represents North West in Golf

Harry Purvis journeyed to Sydney in week 9 to serve as one of the North West region's golf representatives. Over the course of two days at Moore Park Golf Course, he achieved 85 points on Day 1 and 84 points on Day 2. The culmination of his experience was playing at the Coast Golf Course on the event's final day, where he scored 86 points. This opportunity not only allowed Harry to once again represent the North West in Golf but also provided him with the chance to play on some of New South Wales' premier golf courses, adding to the richness of his experience.

Premiers Multicultural Public Speaking

On Thursday June 27, the Multicultural Premier's Public Speaking event took place at Drummond Public School in Armidale. Guyra Central School was proudly represented by four students from K-6. The Stage 2 representatives were Shy-Shy Torrens and Elsie Post, while Charlotte Auld and Rose Gordon represented Stage 3. All our students demonstrated exceptional public speaking skills, showcasing their dedication through thorough speech preparation and practice leading up to the event. Particularly noteworthy were our Stage 3 students, Charlotte and Rose, who delivered an impressive impromptu speech on 'The News' with remarkable maturity and insight. Shy-Shy Torrens received a commendation from the judges for her outstanding performance. Congratulations to Elsie, Shy-Shy, Charlotte, and Rose for their hard work and remarkable accomplishments in the 2024 Multi Cultural Public Speaking Challenge.

PSSA State Championships - Rugby League

It's been an amazing experience for two of our 6th-grade students recently. Flyn Byers (under 11s) and Ryan Vidler (Opens) proudly represented the North West region in Rugby League at the NSW PSSA Rugby League State Championships. The Championships bring together 12 regions from across NSW, each region undergoing a selection process to finalise their team for the event.

Flyn Byers journeyed to St. Mary’s in Sydney during Week 8 to participate in the Under 11s State Championships, where he served as a lock for the North West team. Flyn found the most rewarding aspect of the event was connecting with new people and having the chance to play rugby league. He mentioned that the North West team performed well in the tournament, and he simply relished the overall experience.

Ryan Vidler traveled to Wollongong to participate in the Opens State Championships, where he shared his positive experience of meeting new friends with similar interests. He was amazed by the size of players from other teams, an unforgettable sight for him. Despite not winning any matches, Ryan appreciated the close games and noted the distinction between rural and city teams. The North West team, covering a vast area of rural NSW, excelled against well-prepared city teams despite training together only once before the championships due to distance. A big congratulations to both Flyn and Ryan for their remarkable achievement.

Northern Area Central Schools Rugby League State Knockout

The 16 Boys Rugby League team participated in the Northern Area Central Schools Carnival at Inverell on Monday, 1 July 2024. The team began by facing Uralla, resulting in a 20-4 loss. They bounced back to defeat Walcha 17-16, followed by victories against Bundarra (12-8) and Bowraville (16-8). Despite a tough match against Bingara, which determined advancement to the State finals, the boys displayed great competitiveness and sportsmanship throughout. A special thanks to Treigh Bonser for supporting the team during the event.

The 14 Boys Rugby League team competed in Inverell on Tuesday. Their first match was against the BABE team, a combination of Bundarra, Ashford, Bingara, and Emmaville, which they won 25-8. They then faced Walcha in a closely contested game, emerging victorious with a score of 17-8. In their final match against Uralla, the Guyra boys demonstrated their strength, winning 25-8. As a result of their performance, the 14 Boys have secured a spot to participate in the Central Schools State carnival in Dubbo in September. Special thanks to Harry Purvis for his support and assistance throughout the day.

Dalby QLD Hereford Youth Camp

Six students ranging from year 7 to 11 in Agriculture participated in the four-day Queensland Hereford Youth Camp in Dalby alongside Mrs Smith and Mrs Gwyneth Pearson. The students kicked off their experience with an industry visit at the Wonga Plains Cattle Feedlot on the first day. They explored the grain stores and expansive feedlot, gaining insights into the grain-fed cattle industry from the feedlot owner. Subsequently, they settled at the Dalby Showground, where they camped for three nights and savored a delightful BBQ. The students were divided into teams and tasked with tending to the cattle stalls, feeding and watering the cattle, and learning various skills such as trimming, washing, judging, and parading their animals over the next three days.

Throughout the camp, the students engaged in workshops covering topics like nutrition, trimming, artificial insemination, career opportunities in the cattle industry, meat judging/tasting, and industry discussions. They also participated in a committee meeting and an auction during the final dinner, which added an entertaining touch to the experience. The students' exemplary behaviour and hard work were recognized with numerous ribbons. Here are the notable results:

DeadlyScience

Stage 3 had an amazing experience with Vince and Sarah from DeadlyScience on Wednesday 2 July 2024. They shared their profound scientific and cultural knowledge to inspire, empower, and educate the students. Through a series of interactive lessons and experiments, they provided hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for Stage 3.

During the session, students collaborated and problem-solved to create a traditional fish trap capable of catching 12 fish. They also explored items from nature up close under microscopes to gain a new perspective on the smallest living organisms. Additionally, Stage 3 participated in a Lego building competition, with Rose Gordon and Aoife Collins impressively finishing the tasks first.

Rose Gordon to attend Hockey Tour in 2025

Guyra Central School recently received a letter addressed to student Rose Gordon, acknowledging her as a skilled hockey player. The letter contained an invitation for Rose to join the National Hockey Tour taking place in Fiji in December 2025. This 10-day tour offers a fantastic opportunity for Rose and 57 other talented hockey players.

Rose has confirmed her spot on the tour, and she, along with her parents, brother, and Nan, are eagerly anticipating this opportunity in 2025.
