Term 2 Wellbeing Programs

Teen Mental Health First Aid

Over a three-week period in Term 2, students in Years 7, 8 & 9 participated in the Teen Mental Health First Aid (TMHFA) program led by Jane Weier (ALACT). TMHFA aims to equip teenagers with the skills to identify and assist with mental health issues and emergencies among their peers, and seek adult support promptly. Adolescents often rely on each other during stressful times, sometimes taking on too much. This program emphasises the importance of not shouldering these burdens alone and encourages students to seek various support systems. The program consisted of three lessons covering topics such as understanding mental health issues, available professional help, the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan ('Look, Ask, Listen, Help Your Friend'), using the Action Plan effectively, and self-care strategies for mental health and well-being. Students received TMHFA manuals, Action Plan wallet cards, and information on support services like Kids Helpline. A special thank you to Jane for delivering this crucial well-being program to our students!

Education for Life Presentations

In Term 2, Guyra Central School welcomed Damian Hannan from Family Planning NSW to conduct informative sessions on sexual health, healthy relationships, body image, and respect for our students. We extend our gratitude to Damian for his insightful presentations on these crucial subjects. Special thanks to ALACT for their support in organizing these presentations at Guyra Central School. Moreover, we appreciate ALACT's contribution in purchasing a sexual health educational resource kit for our school!

Love Bites Senior Program

In Term 2, students from Year 10, 11, and 12 participated in the Love Bites Respectful Relationships Program, which was presented by ALACT and supported by the NSW Government. This initiative focuses on nurturing positive relationships among young individuals, advocating for respect for all, and providing them with the necessary skills to establish healthy connections. The program also aims to equip students with problem-solving abilities that do not involve violence, preparing them to tackle relationship challenges. Through engaging discussions, students learn about their rights and responsibilities in relationships and how to cultivate positive connections.

All students across different year levels had the chance to create posters and coasters that showcase the program's themes and encourage healthy and respectful relationships within the school environment.

A special thank you goes to Jane Weier from ALACT, Kailyn Marsh, Eunice Blair, Tremane Patterson, and Georgia Hutton from Centacare for delivering this valuable program to the senior students at Guyra Central School.

Centacare Healthy Relationships Program

Over 6 weeks during Term 2, selected Year 7 & 8 students engaged with a Healthy Relationships program facilitated by Georgia Hutton from Centacare Armidale. The Healthy Relationships program had a focus on increasing students' resilience, social skills and self-esteem. The program aimed to equip the students with the knowledge needed to have respectful relationships, encourage and develop their skills in critical thinking and assist them in being able to problem solve and communicate effectively. With Georgia, the students engaged in numerous different activities and discussions, and learned about boundaries, healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, and the importance of positive self-talk, self-esteem and respect.

A huge thank you to Centacare Armidale and to Georgia for coming to Guyra to run this important program for our students.
