What's Been Happening in 6L?

The students in 6L have been busy writing a persuasive text sharing their opinion on the topic:
“Should the Commonwealth Games combine both able bodied athletes and paralympians or should they have separate games?”
Each student had to decide if they agreed or disagreed with the topic. As a class we brainstormed reasons for and against and then we unpacked the structure of a persuasive text using a multiple paragraph outline (MPO).
As well as whole class discussions the students used the strategy of ‘Think, Pair, Share, Square, Present’ to collaboratively structure an introduction paragraph, identifying what information fits under the General, Specific and Thesis sections. This strategy allowed students to brainstorm ideas with a peer, as well as in a small group, supporting their understanding of the structure, as well as correcting any misunderstandings they may have had. This strategy proved to be very successful and the students wrote fantastic introduction paragraphs to open their persuasive texts.
