💡Literacy Spotlight: Get the GIST!
This week, I had the pleasure of working alongside our Grade 6 classrooms as we explored the Get the GIST comprehension strategy. Together, we practiced one of the most important reading skills—summarising.
The purpose of Get the GIST is to help students identify the main idea of a text by focusing on the most important information and leaving out unnecessary details. Rather than retelling everything they have read, students learn to ask themselves, "What is this paragraph mostly about?" and "What are the key points I need to include?"
The GIST strategy follows four simple steps:
- G – Gather important information, background knowledge and key vocabulary.
- I – Identify the topic by using the vocabulary to refine the main idea into a clear focus.
- S – Summarise the paragraph by combining the most important ideas. Place these under the 5W’s - who, what, where, when, why
T – Top and Tail by checking the first and last sentences, which often reinforce the author's main message.
Our Grade 6 students were encouraged to think carefully about which words and ideas were essential, rather than simply copying sentences from the text. It was wonderful to see students discussing vocabulary, justifying their choices, and refining their summaries until they captured the "gist" in a concise and meaningful way.
Developing the ability to write an effective gist strengthens reading comprehension, supports note-taking, and helps students become more confident readers who can quickly identify the author's key message. It's a valuable strategy that can be used across all learning areas whenever students are reading to understand and learn.
We encourage families to try this strategy at home. After reading a paragraph or a page together, ask your child, "Can you tell me the gist in 10–20 words?" It's a simple but powerful way to build comprehension and encourage thoughtful reading!
Thanks everyone,
