National Tree Planting Day and Bunnings Visit
Did you know that the first official tree planting festival was held in Villanueva de la Sierra in Spain, in 1805? Then in 1872, the modern day Arbor Day concept was founded in Nebraska, USA, which spread throughout the world and to Australia holding its first Arbor Day event on June 20, 1889. Then in 1996, Planet Ark Environmental Foundation launched National Tree Day in Australia as a practical call to action by communities with Schools Tree Day being introduced in the 2000s to take place on the last Friday of July, to engage students in hands-on environmental learning.
Bunnings has been a consistent support of Schools Tree and National Tree planting days and they didn’t disappoint last Friday 24th July, when they came to Holy Family with free seedlings and plants for our garden. The Year 6 students were able to plant rocket, carrots and celery in the Patch and the Bunnings team also brought small bush natives that we decided to plant in the low garden bed behind the year 4 classrooms. It is a great community initiative, where students get hands-on experience planting and caring for the environment. We had a great time and are grateful to Madelyn, Holly and Willow from Bunnings, Notting Hill for helping us to participate in this special annual event.
