Year 6 News
Reading
During our reading time, students have had some great discussions about our text ‘Two Wolves’ and our main character Ben. During the last two weeks, students were making connections to the text, world and self. Many students were able to resonate with Ben and his sister and their family. Students then used these connections to help them identify key details to summarise what we have read and make a prediction for what they think will happen next.
Writing
During the last fortnight, students have further developed their knowledge and understanding of Latin and Greek root words. They have explored the prefix ‘mot/mov/mob’ and ‘aster/astr’. Students learnt about the meanings of the prefixes and how to build words with these prefixes.
Students then explored the importance of using a bibliography. Students discussed the importance of citing where they have researched information and giving credit to the people who created the information they have used. This skill will be an important part of secondary school life.
Year 6 students have also been busy publishing their non-fiction books for their Foundation / Year 1 buddies. We are really excited and looking forward to sharing these with our buddies and reading with them.

Maths
During the last two weeks, Year 6 students began the new topic of fractions. Year 6 students were able to build on prior knowledge of ordering fractions, mixed number fractions and improper fractions. They then furthered their understanding of how to add and subtract fractions with related and common denominators. One of the most vital skills students have been learning and exploring is how to find the lowest common denominator. A vital skill when adding and subtracting fractions.
Inquiry
During Inquiry students have explored Income and how expenses and budgeting help people manage their money. Students were able to explain why budgeting is important and what are some of the everyday expenses of household experience. Students then explored savings goals, as even as young adults, we often want to buy something but need to save.
Students discussed the different ways in which we can keep money safe. They explored the purpose of banks and how they help people keep large amounts of money safe.
Students had questions about digital money and if we would ever become moneyless? A great question, that led to some great student discussions. Students will continue to learn about good financial choices and having good money habits.
Special Event
Year 6 students this term have been involved in ‘The Jump’ a transition program run by the HUME city council. It was designed for students between 10 and 14 to help them foster a sense of belonging, strengthen communication skills, build resilience and ask for help while navigating change. Year 6 students are looking forward to the second half of the program and celebrating their learning.
Year 6 Students are looking forward to their upcoming day camp at Gundiwindi Lodge on Tuesday 15th September. The day looks at providing students with opportunities to develop leadership, resilience, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. For more details, please check Compass!
A big thank you to all the families who attended the Student Led Conferences last week. We are so proud of the Year 6 students and the work they have been doing. It was wonderful to see them sharing their work with you all. Most of all, it was amazing to see the pride they felt after sharing their pieces of work and celebrate their growth and learning with you.
