The Year 5 cohort has reached an exciting milestone in Reading, having finished Wylah the Koorie Warrior: Guardians! Students followed Wylah’s journey as she successfully collected all of the Guardians, while developing their comprehension skills through predictions, inference, retrieval, summarising, and text-to-world connections.

Throughout the novel, students also learned about a wide range of native Australian plants and animals, developing their knowledge and appreciation of Australia’s unique environment. It has been wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort so engaged with Wylah’s adventures while building their understanding of Aboriginal perspectives and the natural world.

Writing

Once upon a time, the Year 5 cohort put a creative twist on some classic stories! This fortnight in Writing, students have been exploring fractured fairy tales, taking familiar fairy tales and changing characters, settings, problems, and endings to create their own unique versions.

Students have been developing their narrative writing skills by experimenting with imaginative ideas, engaging characters, descriptive language, and unexpected twists. It has been wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort use their creativity to transform well-known stories into something completely their own.

 Inquiry

The Year 5 cohort has been getting ready for an exciting adventure at Melbourne Zoo! This fortnight in Inquiry, students researched a chosen animal they will have the opportunity to see during their upcoming zoo visit.

Students investigated their animal’s habitat, diet, adaptations, behaviours, and interesting facts, building their understanding of how animals survive and thrive in their environments. It has been wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort developing their research skills and sharing their excitement as they prepare to become animal experts at the zoo!

Special Event

Student Led Conferences

Celebrating learning, growth, and achievement was the focus for the Year 5 cohort during Student-Led Conferences on Tuesday 11 August. Students had the opportunity to take ownership of their learning by sharing their achievements, reflecting on their progress, and discussing areas they would like to continue developing with their families.

It was wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort confidently presenting their learning and demonstrating responsibility, resilience, and pride in their achievements. The conferences provided a valuable opportunity for students, families, and teachers to celebrate growth and work together towards future learning goals.
