What we have been up to...

Last week, our focus text was Everyday Heroes – People Who Help in My Community. Through the text, we explored what it means to be an everyday hero, learning about different vocations and the important roles people play in helping our community.

This week, we read The Garden of Broken Things and Rose Meets Mr Wintergarden. Both stories explore friendship and overcoming the fear of the unknown. In each book, a child’s visit helps brighten the life of a lonely older character and brings new life to an overgrown garden.

In Writing, we have continued with our unit on narratives. The students came up with possible problems for their stories, as well as developing a series of events that lead to it being solved.

In Maths, we have been learning how to partition one-, two- and three-digit numbers. By learning how to do this, it helps to build on the students' foundational understanding of place value, making mental arithmetic and addition/subtraction easier.

For Topic, we have been investigating our connections to Bendigo, the city that we live in. We viewed a slideshow that identified some of Bendigo's key landmarks, before the students completed an activity about some of the places that are special to them in Bendigo.

Mathematics and numeracy at home

If you’re looking for ways to support your child’s Mathematics learning at home, this website offers helpful videos, resources, and ideas: https://www.vic.gov.au/mathematics-and-numeracy-home

We will also share a few practical ideas in each newsletter for you to try.

Talking about maths

  • Use specific terms when asking for items. For example, ask your child to get the ‘one-litre’ milk bottle from the fridge, or the ‘one-kilo’ bag of flour from the cupboard.
  • When cooking, talk about different measurements used, such as teaspoons, millilitres, litres, and cups. Discuss ideas about empty and full.
  • As you walk, talk and play together describe your child’s movements as they climb ‘over’ the fence, slide ‘between’ the poles, and swing ‘under’ the monkey bars. This helps your child understand language related to spatial awareness.
  • Sorting activities support your child to understand concepts such as ‘same’ and ‘different’. Use recycling as an opportunity to sort items to place in the rubbish. For example, paper, plastic, food waste and general waste.
