Year 5/6 Cluster News

Photo Day – Tuesday August 4

Students are required to wear formal uniform for this day.

Please refer to the communication sent to parents about the correct uniform required.

Year 6 students will have a ‘Graduation’ photo and are required to wear their Year 6 t-shirts. Please ensure that they have their Year 6 t-shirt and sports shorts to get changed into. Please ensure they pack their PE socks and sneakers.

SACSA events:

We have begun training for SACSA Netball, which will be held in Week 4 this term.

After that we will begin training for SACSA Football, followed by SACSA Basketball in Term 4. If your child is interested in trying out for SACSA Football or Basketball, please encourage them to practise their fitness, ball skills and teamwork skills at home.

HOME INQUIRY: 

Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.  

Mathematics: Continuing to develop their recall of multiplication facts, with the goal of building automatic recall of multiplication facts up to 10 × 10.

At home, please continue to encourage your child to read the time at different points throughout the day. The more opportunities they have to practise this skill in real-life situations, the more confidently and independently they will be able to apply their learning.

Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop:

We are continuing our novel study of Hatchet, which connects closely with our Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet. In Writer’s Workshop, students are continuing the report-writing unit they began last term, further developing their understanding of the structure, features and language used to create effective factual reports. These areas of learning will support students as they investigate the features of different environments and biomes, and explore how living things adapt to survive in these conditions.

Mathematics:

Students have begun inquiring into angles. They are developing their ability to identify and classify acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex angles, and will learn to estimate, construct and measure angles in degrees using a protractor. As their understanding develops, students will investigate relationships between angles on a straight line, angles at a point and vertically opposite angles, using these properties to determine unknown angles and explain their mathematical reasoning.

Inquiry:

We are continuing with our ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit of inquiry, where we explore the features of envrionments connected to biomes and how living things adapt to surviving in these conditions. Students will explore the interconnectedness of ecosystems within biomes and how resources are used within these.

Parent Exhibition Information Session – Week 4 - Wednesday 12 August. There are 2 sessions available to parents to attend. A separate communication for this event has been sent to the Year 6 parents with a RSVP link to attend the event.
Year 5/6 Action Excursion – Week 5 - Tuesday 18 August.
Book Week Parade and Community Breakfast – Week 6 - 25 August
Student Free Day – Week 7 – 4 September
Year 5 Celebration of Learning – Week 9 - Thursday 17 September – 6:00pm – 7:00pm
Year 6 Exhibition Evening – Week 10 - Tuesday 22 September – 6:00 – 7:30pm
