Facts on Fire - Building Mathematical Fluency at School

Dear Brighton Primary School Families,

We are writing to share our whole-school focus on fluency practice in mathematics. To be highly competent mathematical thinkers, students need strong, automatic recall of key number facts. Fluency is a critical foundation for success in problem-solving, reasoning, and higher-level mathematical thinking.

To further support students in developing and retaining these essential skills, we are excited to trial a mathematics fluency initiative called Facts on Fire.

Facts on Fire is an evidence-based fluency program designed to strengthen students’ computational accuracyspeed, and automaticity. It has been shown to improve overall achievement in mathematics by building strong foundations in number skills.

The program will be delivered daily at the beginning of each mathematics lesson for 5 minutes. These short, consistent practice sessions help students develop and maintain fluency with key maths facts, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication. These are essential skills that support success in all areas of mathematics.

Through regular practice, students work through a structured sequence of skills and progress towards mastery at their own pace.

What are the benefits for your child?

  • Improved confidence in mathematics
  • Faster and more accurate recall of number facts
  • Stronger foundations for problem solving and higher-level maths
  • A consistent, whole-school approach to developing fluency

We look forward to seeing the positive impact this program will have on students’ confidence, fluency, and achievement in mathematics. Additional information, along with student resources, can be found on the Facts on Fire website. We also encourage you to support your child by providing opportunities to practise and rehearse number facts at home, as regular reinforcement will further strengthen their fluency.

Kind regards,
