Year 5
Literacy
Our Year 5 students have started The Grandest Bookshop in the World! This week, they have been investigating how authors bring their writing to life through figurative language.
We have been identifying and experimenting with metaphors, similes and personification to create vivid descriptions and engage their readers.
Maths
Our Year 5 students began the term by exploring data, using tally charts to collect and organise information before representing their findings in column graphs. Our next focus is on fractions, decimals and percentages, where students will explore the connections between these concepts and develop their understanding of how they represent the same values in different ways.
Topic
This term, our Year 5 students are exploring the big question: What is the environment and why does it matter? They will investigate the natural world, explore how humans interact with and impact the environment, and consider the importance of protecting our planet.
Leadership
This term, we will focus on leadership and being an upstander. On Tuesday 27 October, we will take part in an incursion with Aspire for Higher, exploring what makes a good leader and how we can be supportive members of a team. Students will participate in a range of team challenges designed to develop their leadership, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
Over the next two weeks, we will begin discussing leadership positions and responsibilities with our students to ensure they feel prepared and confident to present their speeches at the end of the term.
Buddies
Our wonderful Year 5 students continue to show kindness and patience towards their Prep buddies. It is always a highlight to see the special connections they are building, as they support, encourage and care for their younger peers. We are so proud of the positive role models they are becoming!
Year 6
Memory Books
Our Year 6 students are loving creating their memory books, celebrating their wonderful primary school years. They have been reminiscing as they search for old school photos, write about their favourite memories and reflect on the friendships and experiences that have shaped their time at Sacred Heart. It has been lovely to see them enjoying these special moments together as they make the most of their final term with their classmates.
St Vincent de Paul
Next Wednesday, 28 October, our Year 6 students will be running their fundraising stalls to raise money for St Vincent de Paul and support people experiencing homelessness.
On Friday, 30 October, they will take part in a school sleepout, where they will learn more about homelessness and gain an insight into the challenges faced by people who experience sleeping rough. This is a valuable opportunity for students to develop empathy, compassion and a deeper understanding of how they can make a difference in their community.
