Year 6

In English Innovation, students will continue developing their journalistic writing skills. Drawing on interviews conducted with members of their target audience, they will compile and analyse their findings to identify areas of interest for potential article topics. Students will experiment with different text types, including persuasive, procedural and informative texts, with the purpose of engaging and entertaining their audience. They will collaborate with their peers and apply research, writing, editing and publishing skills to create the Semester Two edition of the Glen Waverley Primary School student magazine.

In Mathematics Innovation, students will apply Pythagoras’ Theorem to consider the design of ramps for accessibility and calculate the volume of triangular prisms. They will also collaborate to measure lengths and angles to calculate the height of tall objects, such as a tree, the undercover area and the Year 5 building. Students will explore techniques for solving problems involving two variables using simultaneous equations. Throughout the semester, they will be encouraged to communicate and clearly justify their mathematical thinking, both verbally and through written solutions.

In Aviation Innovation, students will continue to investigate aeroplanes, exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of flight and aircraft design. They will also demonstrate the Innovator’s Mindset traits of being Visionary, Determined, Collaborative, Courageous and Reflective.

Students will learn about the forces and scientific formulas relating to flight and investigate the history and theory of aviation. They will use mathematical calculations to explore why and how aircraft fly. Students will conduct a variety of experiments to develop their understanding of these concepts and collaborate with a partner to engineer and fly an aircraft constructed from balsa wood and electrical components. After flying and observing their aircraft, students will synthesise the theories they have explored and analyse the data they collect to make modifications that improve the flight characteristics of their plane.

In Virtual Design Innovation, students will dive into the world of branding and advertising, analysing how a brand’s identity is developed and what businesses need to consider when adapting their image to appeal to a new audience. This unit will lead into a project where students will rebrand a fictional company, considering elements such as the logo, colour palette, imagery and product line.

In the second half of the term, students will be introduced to the principles and elements of fashion design and explore how these can be applied in practical ways. To conclude the semester, students will take on the role of style consultants, interviewing teachers and designing tailored outfit collections to reflect their individual preferences.

In Rocketry Innovation, students will continue to explore the principles of rocketry, flight and design while incorporating the five traits of the Innovator’s Mindset. They will develop their skills as Visionary, Reflective, Courageous, Determined and Collaborative innovators.

Students will explore forces through both theory and practical experiments to demonstrate their understanding. They will then create and launch bottle rockets, gathering and analysing data and observations from each flight.

Students will also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge by creating their own modified bottle rocket, incorporating features such as fins, nose cones and parachutes. They will evaluate the success of their rocket using observational data, measurements from an altimeter and mathematical calculations.

In Media Arts Innovation, students will continue compiling and finalising their Year 6 Graduation videos. They will use their filmmaking and editing skills to select, organise and refine footage, photographs, music and narration. Students will work collaboratively to ensure their videos capture the special memories and experiences of their final year at GWPS, creating a meaningful and memorable memento to celebrate their time at primary school.

In Art Innovation, Year 6 students will explore the sculptural works of renowned artist Dale Chihuly, with a focus on his Venetian Series. Students will investigate how Chihuly uses unique and exaggerated forms to create dynamic vase sculptures. They will experiment with drawing a variety of vase structures, playing with shape, form and proportion while exploring the visual elements of colour, line and shape. Students will then transform their designs into three-dimensional vase sculptures using a range of mixed media, making creative choices to develop their own unique artworks.

Following a successful Term 3, our Year 5 and 6 students will continue with the Badminton Sports Innovation program throughout Term 4. Building on the skills and knowledge developed last term, students will continue to refine their serving, forehand and backhand strokes, net play and defensive skills through engaging activities, challenges and game-based learning.

Students will further develop their tactical awareness and strategic thinking as they apply their skills in singles and doubles matches. Term 4 will provide students with opportunities to challenge themselves, put their skills into practice and enjoy the ongoing development of their badminton abilities in a fun, supportive and active environment.

This term, in Languages Innovation, students will continue their journey into the fascinating world of Ancient Chinese inventions, with a special focus on woodblock printing, one of China’s important contributions to the sharing of information and ideas. Year 5 and 6 students will take their learning further by exploring how woodblock printing developed and why it was so significant. They will investigate how printing helped people share knowledge, stories and ideas with a wider audience and how this invention influenced the world.

Students will also take part in creative printing projects while using their Chinese language skills along the way. Through these activities, students will build a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, history and innovation while learning in a creative and engaging way.
