Podcasting

Year 6 Literacy in secondary school happens in lots of different forms. We explore some of the variations to the curricul in year 6 as well. This year the students have been learning the skills of podcasting. Usually by term 3 we are starting to see many completed podcasts. Term 2 saw us take a break from this skill but this term we are back up and running taking the very basic steps a little further. Over the coming weeks we will start to see many students complete their first "show". Over the past two weeks the students have been refining their Audacity skills and creating scripts to use in creating their shows. Just like their written stories get edited, we have also been learning to edit their recorded words by cutting out mistakes and aukward quiet moments. We use the same teaching methods as our normal learning where the teacher models, followed by we do and then independent practice. Attached below is a couple of steps merged together prior to their independent practice.

Maths

In Maths, we will be exploring the Cartesian plane and learning how coordinates can be used to describe the position of points. Students will develop their understanding of the x- and y-axes and the four quadrants, including how positive and negative numbers are used to locate and plot coordinates accurately. They will practise reading, plotting and describing points, as well as identifying patterns and relationships between coordinates. Students will then apply their understanding through a range of engaging problem-solving activities and challenges that build their confidence in navigating the Cartesian plane.

Literacy

In Literacy, we are continuing our study of How to Bee by Bren MacDibble. Students will explore how characters’ actions and behaviours can reveal feelings that are not directly stated, using evidence from the text to support their inferences. We will also investigate how informal and dialect-rich language helps shape character voice and identity. As we delve further into the novel, students will look closely for clues about developing relationships and use these to make and justify predictions about what may happen next.

Inquiry and Wellbeing

In Inquiry, students will now put their learning about healthy minds and bodies into action by creating podcasts for the wider school community. Drawing on their understanding of emotions, relationships, self-regulation and positive choices, students will work collaboratively to plan, script and record engaging podcast episodes designed to support the wellbeing of others. As part of this project, students will also explore School-Wide Positive Behaviour (SWPB) and consider how our school expectations help create a safe, respectful and positive environment for everyone. This will be a great opportunity for students to take what they have learnt and turn it into meaningful messages for a real audience.
