Spring Gully Primary School Auskick – Term 3 Program
Auskick is coming to Spring Gully PS in Term 3! This fun, after-school program is a great way for students to build footy skills, stay active, and connect with friends—all right here at school and organised by AFL Central Vic staff.

Auslan News
Grade Preps have continued with their topic of Describing Myself/About Me, for describing your appearance. New signs include: my hair, curly, wavy, straight, long, short, fringe, colour, black, red, orange, brown and blonde, as well as my eyes, brown, blue, green and hazel (hazel is fingerspelled.)
The Preps have enjoyed a hair-cutting papercraft activity and created some self-portraits to practise signing their eye colour, hair style and colour. (See the pics below of some of the papercraft haircuts and styles from Prep Greene!) See if your child/ren can sign their hair colour and style, and eye colour for you!
Grade Prep students have also practised signing “How old are you?” in Auslan by touching their nose, and replying with their age also by touching their nose to sign the number for “I am ___ years old!!”
Grade 1-2s have started their new topic on Auslan signs for People: he, she, they, mine, yours, theirs, boy, girl, child, children, adult, man, woman/lady, person, people. They have been building on these words to sign simple sentences about people. Students practised interpreting signs about people and matching them to the correct pictures. Students have been applying their knowledge of people signs to write simple sentences with a partner, to then have-a-go at signing their sentences about people for the class to interpret.
The Grade 3-4 students have been revising signs for Days of the Week, Months of the Year, and Seasons. Students have completed 2 worksheets on these signs, and have been using the signs for: start/begin, before and after, and weekend, to practise asking their peers questions about Australia’s Seasons including the Wet and Dry Seasons of the Top End, the Days of the Week, and Months of the Year. Students are enjoying having a go at interpreting the questions and then giving an answer using Auslan also!! The signing skills in the grade 3-4 classes have been very impressive!!😊
We were all very fascinated with a video we watched this week, of a Deaf lady fluently signing the Days of the Week and the Months of the Year! We thought we were getting fast, but this lady was amazing to watch!!
Grade 5-6s have continued learning about Storytelling in Auslan, revising revising the basics of Depicting signs, including Size and Shape Specifiers (SASS), and HOLM + NMF which are all integral parts of the Auslan language and important in the grammatical structure with Auslan being a visual language. Ask your child/ren if they can tell you what the letters in these acronyms stand for and what the meaning is behind each letter! The Grade 5-6 classes have enjoyed another story by Deaf Storyteller Edan Chapman, called: ‘Fish vs Shark.’ The students have learned a lot about Depicting signs, SASS and HOLM + NMF simply through watching Edan’s amazing Auslan Storytelling skills!
Grade 5-6s have started a new topic this week on People and Describing Myself. Students are currently revising signs from past years, and are working towards being able to describe themselves and other people in Auslan.
