Grade Prep/1/2

We have had another busy fortnight learning some tricky concepts in mathematics. The Prep students have been expanding their number awareness and counting for value correspondence. Students have been encouraged to touch to count their items/ counters rather than rote count without looking. We are practicing understanding at three is the equvalent to three physical objects and so on. It will be very helpful if you can continue this practice at home. For example, when you might be cooking dinner, have the students help you by collecting 5 potatoes etc. The grade one students have been revising the differences between numbers to assist in their addition and subtraction skills, as well as revising how to add using a number line. The grade two students have been working hard on bridging to the nearest ten. This includes using their knowledge of friends of ten. The students favourite activity has had to be using the iPad's for Maths Seeds. If you would like access to student Maths Seeds and Reading Eggs accounts at home, please reach out to us and we can provide you with your child's login details.
Students have also been working on practicing the value of the week and how we can show these out in the playground or in our classroom. We are also discussing our fist to five feelings check-ins in the morning and how we can use our emotions toolkit when we need help in regulating our emotions. Our morning circle is my favourite time in the day. The students play a positive primer (their favourite being quiz questions where they move to one side of the room to answer the quiz question), fist to five feelings and learning readiness check-in, as well as going through our visual schedule, make any announcements and complete our roll. The students love brainstorming different categories that they can answer the roll through. We have used our favourite colours, words, sports teams, ice-cream flavour to name a few. Such as positive way to start our day.
