Lower Secondary (Years 7-8)

The 7/8 cohort has had a fantastic start to Term 4!

Our Travel Training program is well underway, with excursions to Parkville Station and a nearby park. Students have been practising their community access skills, including navigating public transport and independently purchasing their own lunch. Classes have also enjoyed excursions to Watergardens and local community walks. Over the next two weeks, students will attend the Marvel Stadium 360 Tour, which we are looking forward to!

This term in numeracy, we have begun exploring money, which has tied in fantastically with our Travel Training program. Students are developing their understanding of money and practising practical skills such as recognising money, making choices, paying for items and handling transactions. These hands-on experiences provide valuable opportunities for students to apply their numeracy skills in real-life situations and build their independence in the community.

We have begun our new inquiry topic, Our Environment. Students have been learning about what plants need to survive and have planted their own plants. We have also started exploring different living conditions and the adaptations of plants and animals in various habitats. Students will continue to build on this learning by creating dioramas to represent different habitats and demonstrate their understanding.

In literacy, we have been exploring Window by Jeannie Baker, which explores the changes that occur over time through its wordless picture format. This has provided wonderful opportunities for students to interpret visual information, discuss what they notice in each image and develop their comprehension skills. Students have also begun planning their own narrative texts, demonstrating their wonderful imagination and creativity as they develop characters, settings and story ideas.
