The Warrandyte Festival is taking place this year on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th March.
Our school will once again participate in the fabulous annual Saturday Street Parade, which will start at 10am. This year’s theme is 'TREEmendous' to reflect Warrandyte’s great relationship with our beautiful trees and their magnificent canopies. We will walk together from the Community Centre along Yarra Street to Stiggants Reserve.
Jordan Adams (Lila's dad) is creatively coordinating our school's response to this theme this year. Thank you, Jordan! A plan has been hatched to construct a very large tree-human from card board boxes and pallets, however, we need some assistance from our school community to make it work. This is what we would specifically like help with:
we have some very large cardboard boxes (such as the ones that hold apples in supermarkets), however we could do with a few more. It would be great if any more boxes could please be brought up to the school. We would need these boxes to be ready to decorate by the classes this Monday 24th March.
a parent rep from each class to help coordinate the decoration of their class' box. Each class will have a box with which to decorate. The parent rep can coordinate some time with the class teacher from Monday 24th - Thursday 27th March to help students staple or wire their contribution on to their box.
The students are asked to bring in this Monday 24th some large natural things they've found and collected, such as bark, dried grasses etc - anything basically from nature (and that is already dried; ie. no freshly picked branches). They do need to be fairly large. Small items will not be seen well and will take too long to cover.
If you are keen to be involved in any way - big or small - we would love to hear from you! Many hands make light and fabulous work! Please contact myself at julie.botham-clarke@education.vic.gov.au
We plan to make some things in art class, such as nests, birds, and leaves, to be placed on the branches of our tree-human. We hope to convey the message that our tree is fabulous at providing nourishment, protection, joy and habitat to many creatures, and especially that we are grateful for the beautiful, life-giving trees in Warrandyte.
In the week leading up to parade, we will ask our students to make a nature crown that they can wear on the day. Preps, grades 1 & 2 will make their headbands in art classes. If students can wear earthy-colours for our parade, too, that would be fabulous.
Some details about the day: On the Saturday 29th March, our school will assemble from 9.15am in Wonguim Wilam Park on Yarra Street and walk to Stiggants Reserve. Please note that attendees consent to being photographed, filmed and sound recorded as part of the event. We look forward to our school community being involved once again as our beautiful Warrandyte town is transformed into a leafy riot of colour, texture, music, movement and excitement during the Festival!
Many students have already brought in their art smock in to be stored in their class tub in the art room. Thank you!
If your child has not yet brought their named art smock to school, please ensure they do so asap to protect their uniform when we're doing messy work with clay, paints, glaze etc.
Looking forward to a fun and creative term 1 in the art room with our fabulous students!
And looking forward to working alongside some parents and friends to enable our response to the Festival Parade!
Kindly,
Julie Clarke
