As always, we love catching up with news from our former Collegians.
The most significant event that MOCA hosts each year is our annual Requiem Mass for our Deceased Old Boys. This year’s Mass will be held on Friday, 7th November at 7pm, in our Mazenod College Chapel. Everyone is welcome to attend.
At this Mass, we warmly welcome back the families and friends of our Deceased Old Boys as we pray for the Souls of our Old Boys who have died, as well as for their families. Following this Mass, everyone is invited to join us for a light supper in our College Staffroom.
Last Friday night, 24th October, we celebrated Mazenod’s inaugural “Alumni Awards” at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. This evening emerged from the inspiration and vision of our Mazenod College Principal, Dr Paul Shannon, and recognised some of Mazenod’s most outstanding people and commended them for their service to Mazenod College and to our wider community.

The evening was hosted by our very own alumni, Gerard Whateley (MOC 1992), who kept us entertained with his anecdotes, passion, and professionalism. It was a fabulous, joy-filled night, and was supported by the Mazenod Old Collegians’ Association (MOCA), and it brought together members of MOCA, our MOCA Sporting Clubs, our Mazenod Staff, Parents and Alumni.

Our “Burning Flame Award” winners were
Father Patrick Mornoney OMI
Father Kevin Davine OMI
Mr Peter Le Grand
Professor Oscar Moze (MOC1972)
George Calombaris (MOC1996)
Philip Ryan (MOC1988)
Gerard Whateley (MOC1992)
In addition, Steven Tynan (MOC1983) was posthumously awarded the “Burning Flame Award” and this award had been presented to his sister, Mrs Sue Fitzgerald, at our Steven Tynan Memorial Assembly on the 12th September this year. Our other award winner was Cameron Falloon (MOC1991), who received our inaugural “Leave to Serve Award” at our final Year 12 Assembly on the 17th October. Both Steven Tynan’s and Cameron Falloon’s Awards were presented in front of the entire College Community.
All of us who attended cannot wait for next year! It will always be held on the eve of the Cox Plate!
Despite the cold and the heavy rain, nothing was able to dampen the spirits of our Old Collegians from the Class of 1972. A huge number of Mazenod College’s foundation class which began at St Joseph’s, Springvale in 1967, gathered at the Rosstown Hotel in Carnegie, as we celebrated their move from being part of two classes in 1967, to the College’s first graduating class in 1972.
The afternoon commenced at 12.30pm and the last of our Old Boys concluded their festivities at 10.30pm! It was amazing to see the Old Boys’ faces as they recognised each other after all the years that had passed! It was a day filled with great stories, laughs, funny speeches and immense joy! On this occasion, Fr Pat Moroney OMI, the College’s former Rector on two occasions joined his former students. During this time when the class of 1972 was at school, Fr Pat was the Old Boys’ teacher, bursar and the coach of their senior AFL football and cricket teams.

It gave me immense joy to be able to share a few anecdotes about Fr Pat and to present him with the College’s “Burning Flame Award”. Fr Pat’s wonderful sense of humour, great humility and dry wit were truly evident in his short speech to the Old Boys. To quote Fr Pat’s often used expression, he was “our star’ on the day! As a gift from MOCA, our Class of 1972 were presented with Mazenod College Caps. Our Reunion reminded us of the wonderful Charism of St Eugene de Mazenod and of the happiness of being part of Mazenod College!
We are always keen to promote our Old Collegians and their professions, businesses and trades. Please feel free to contact us at Mazenod College. We will include these in our Mazenod College Newsletter, The Mazenod Gazette, as well as on our Alumnly Website and on our Mazenod Old Collegians’ Association Facebook page.
My name is Ethan Atkinson, and I am a Vocational Major student at Mazenod College, about to commence Year 12.
