Mr Scott Reaper - Program Leader - Sport

Wednesday kicked off sport last week for the blue and gold. Our Hockey team came away with a well-deserved 3–2 victory over Padua, despite managing several injuries. Full credit to the boys who stepped up when called upon and played their part in securing the win.

AIC Round 4 saw us travel across to St Laurence’s College in all three sports. Lauries are our traditional rival, and it certainly was no different on Saturday with many tightly contested matches across tennis, rugby league and basketball.

Our First XIII Rugby League continued their strong form with an impressive 28–8 victory. The First IV Tennis delivered a dominant performance, securing a comprehensive 8–0 win. Our First V Basketball once again provided plenty of excitement, with another game going right down to the wire before the boys held their nerve to claim a thrilling 83–79 victory.

This weekend we host St Edmund’s College with some supplementary games with Ambrose Treacy College, so please check the draws carefully.

We would love to see as many students, families and supporters as possible come along to cheer on our teams for the final AIC home game of the year and give the boys the support they deserve.

Dealing with Adversity

One of the great things about sport is it challenges us. It challenges us physically, mentally, socially, it tests our character and our resilience. The reason it challenges us is because it means so much to us. Many of you young men will be talking about your sporting highlights at school at reunions and gatherings for the rest of your lives. This is a great thing, that passion builds community, it gives us the opportunity to grow as young men and it challenges us, especially when things do not go so well.

When I think about the life lessons sport provides us and the challenges our young men deal with when representing the college is sport, I come back to the Marist values of humility, simplicity and modesty. I am well aware that is challenging dealing with the pressure of expectation: to earn a spot in the team, to do well personally, the desire to win, working with coaches, working with officials. Every time we play sport it is a learning opportunity, a chance to be better than we were before. That is not just performing, it is also in our resilience, our discipline and our respect. For me, those three small words should be in the forefront of our minds as we play each week: humility, simplicity and modesty. If we get that right, we go a long way to playing the game the right way and representing the College in way we can all be proud of.

A few words from our AIC Captain Will Lambley

After a week off, we took on St Laurence’s, a fairly new and young team. The morning kicked off quickly, as Indy and I finally clicked, dominating the Lauries number 1 pairing, whilst Oscar and Tom cleaned up their match, putting us up 2-0.

Similar results followed for the second round of doubles matches, with Marist taking both sets again. A special mention must go to Oscar and Tom who recovered from 0-3 down, winning 6 games in a row to take the set 6-3. And so, heading into the singles, we had our most commanding lead of the season, up 4-0, essentially solidifying our round.

However the job wasn’t done yet. With strong shot selection and a refined approach game, I dispatched of my opponent quickly, guaranteeing the team the overall win. Oscar soon followed, having mentally broken down his opponent, claiming yet another win. Despite a rocky start, Indy continued the dominant trend of the weekend, finishing his match shortly after. With Tom’s match left, we not only searched for our first win of the season, but a complete whitewash. Having dropped the first set, Tom turned it around, taking the second set 7-5 in a close contest. Entering the match tiebreaker, we knew it would be close. Even whilst cramping, his opponent continued to push all the way to the end. And after a long rollercoaster of emotions, Tom finally won the 10-point tiebreaker 18-16, giving us the long-awaited win.

Next week, we return home to tackle St Edmunds, where we hope to continue our winning ways. Thank you to everyone who came to support, and we hope to see as many of you down at the courts again this week.

Basketball

Mr Jonte Brown - Basketball Coordinator

Round 4 saw Marist College Ashgrove take on St Laurence’s College across another big weekend of AIC Basketball. Across the 31 games played, Marist recorded 12 wins and 19 losses, with plenty of competitive contests and strong performances across all year levels.

Congratulations to our 1st V, who secured a thrilling 83–80 victory over St Laurence’s. Other strong wins came from the 4th V, 11A, 9A, 9B, 9C, 8C, 7C, 6D, 5A, 5B and 5D.

While it wasn’t our strongest round of results this season, there are still plenty of Marist teams firmly in contention for premierships in their respective divisions. With several rounds remaining, every game will be important as teams look to finish the season strongly.

With the season now entering an important stage, our focus shifts quickly to Round 5. There is plenty still on the line across our divisions, and we look forward to seeing our teams continue to compete hard and build towards a strong finish to the season.

1st V - Coaches Report - Mr James Lymer

Round 4: Marist vs St Laurence’s

Round 4 presented our biggest challenge of the season so far, with an undefeated St Laurence’s side awaiting us in a top-of-the-table clash. With both teams entering the contest unbeaten, the stakes were high, and the winner would take an important step forward in the race for the premiership.

Playing on the road, we knew we would be facing a hostile environment. After an outstanding week of preparation, the boys showed they were ready for the challenge, racing out to a 16-7 lead late in the first quarter. No lead was going to be safe, with Laurie’s responding well, closing the quarter out strong and drawing level heading into the second quarter. Despite the pressure, we were able to generate better scoring opportunities more consistently, taking a 42-38 lead into halftime.

Our focus during the break was clear: stay engaged defensively, protect the paint, and capitalise on our strengths in the half court. The boys executed well in the third, extending the lead to nine points heading into the final quarter. The fourth quarter went right down to the wire, with Laurie's closing the gap to just three points late in the game. Credit the poise of the group, withstanding the punches thrown late, icing the game with a clutch free throw in the closing seconds, helping seal the victory, 83-79.

An emotional game and one that the boys will cherish for a long time. A massive shout out to the students and parents who made the effort to support the players. Although the lead puts Marist at the top of the table, the job is not finished. This Saturday vs Eddies is the final home game of the AIC season. With tip off at 12:15pm, we need the Hive swarming to help keep the streak alive and give the year 12 players one last home game to remember.
