Writers' Group Sovereign Hill Trip

At the end of last term, Writers’ Group was once again on the road for a writing adventure, this time to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. Students were given the task of writing a descriptive piece on either a place, a job from the 1850s, or a scene inspired by a very old object. As well as panning for gold and roaming the streets, we were able to go underground and tour a mine which was a highlight for many. The day was sunny and perfect for wandering the replica town and diggings. Students were able to meet and chat with the town’s costumed residents – the magician was a highlight.

Regional Student Voice Conference Leadership Day – Built by Students, Powered by Students

On Wednesday 15th July, Oberon High School and five other Geelong-area schools met for our Regional Student Voice Conference Planning Day. Forty of the region’s best and brightest student leaders gathered to examine key data reported by the various surveys undertaken in their schools and planned for the larger conference coming up in September. 

Students discussed and decided on the key issues of bullying, body image, racism, and disruptive behaviours as the four priorities for the conference, and then spent the day breaking up into mixed groups and diving deep into their specific focuses. By the end of the day, these combined groups of students worked professionally and with laudable collegiality to develop strong scaffolds and guiding questions for the larger group of their 100+ peers slated to attend the September conference, providing invaluable support to make this upcoming event as successful as it can be.

Representing Oberon High School were Beau Beal, Akira Parker, and Adrick Widdowson, supported by Mr. Hocking, Ms. Gray, Mr Vinton, and Mr. Ferguson. It was extremely impressive to see our students stepping up as leaders for this planning day, using their voice and directing their passions towards laying strong groundwork for true positive change for both their own and other’s learning communities.
