Principal's Report

Welcome back to Term 3! While we are only two weeks into the term it has been a very busy time with multiple events, sporting activities, and also industrial action to work through! 

This past week has seen our Information Night welcome hundreds of parents and students, where the hot topics were all about future pathways, electives and potentially industry-based training opportunities and a host of other things to consider. For parents and students this can be a confronting time, given the “language” of schools and programs and then trying to decipher what it all means for their respective child. 

It was really pleasing to see the friendly dialogue between our staff and our families, once again highlighting to me the level of dedication shown by the staff at Oberon, to assist all students with their learning and development, while also trying to make the process of decision making just a little easier. 

If any parent or student is still unsure about their potential selections or you just need a little more information, please feel free to contact the school and we will happily put you onto the people who can assist you. Our staff also understand that the decisions being made regarding future electives, programs and potentially work-related pathways are very important so we are always willing to assist when needed. 

In the coming weeks there will be further interviews and opportunities for all families and students to discuss their future pathways with staff so there are more forums to clarify things where needed as well.

Term 3 is often the busiest term for the year as students quickly work towards the end of VCE, planning starts for the following year, along with a number of winter sports events and camps, some of which have been running throughout this week such as our Ski Camp and our Music Camp. These extra-curricular activities often take many months of organisation but I have been really impressed with the amount of activities, camps (including students at the Alpine Leadership Camp), lunchtime clubs, sports days, leadership forums and other opportunities available for students to experience a wide range of team building or practical learning experiences. It really does underscore the commitment of our staff to provide a wide range of life experiences, outside of the classroom, in order to help students grow as people but also understand the world around them. 

For our parents, we also have our first whole school assembly next week and we welcome all parents to come along and see our students perform, be acknowledged for the work that they are doing or the projects that they are involved with currently. These assemblies really showcase the diversity of the school, while celebrating so many positive attributes of our students and the learning program at Oberon. Parents should be aware that we are trying to proactively use these social media sites to highlight what is occurring in the school, in order to improve parent and community understanding of our school.
