Cold and Flu Season

It’s that time of year again- cold winds, dark mornings and runny noses. We’re seeing a noticeable increase in cold and flu cases across the school this winter. Here’s what you need to know to stay healthy, protect others, and look after yourself if you do get sick.

 

Cold vs. Flu – Know the Symptoms

Cold and flu symptoms often overlap, but the flu tends to hit harder and more suddenly. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Cold: Runny/stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing, mild cough, fatigue
  • Flu: High fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, dry cough, nausea or vomiting

 

What To Do If You're Feeling Unwell

If you start to feel sick, the most important thing is to stay home. Coming to school while unwell increases the risk of spreading illness even before symptoms get severe.

 

  1. Stay home – Especially if you have a fever, body aches, or a persistent cough.
  2. Rest and hydrate – Allow your body time to recover and drink plenty of fluids.
  3. Use over-the-counter medicine – To ease symptoms like congestion or fever.
  4. Seek medical advice – If symptoms worsen or persist after a few days.

The Importance of the Flu Vaccine

Getting the flu vaccine is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others. It doesn’t give you the flu instead, it helps your body build immunity against the latest strains. Even if you do catch the virus, the vaccine can reduce the severity and length of illness.

 

You can get the flu vaccine at:

  • Your GP
  • Local pharmacies (Terry White, Chemist Warehouse)
  • Sunraysia Community Health Services (SCHS)
  • Mildura Rural City Council
