It has been another busy Term 3 in the Foundation Learning Centre. We have engaged in some fantastic learning and exciting experiences.
The FLC students celebrated Father’s Day by inviting their dads and special friends into school for a wonderful morning tea. There were lots of fun activities and challenges for our special people to enjoy together. The students also worked hard to make cards and gifts for their dads and loved sharing this special morning with their families. It was wonderful to see the smiles, laughter and excitement during the paper plane throwing contest, where the students and parents lined up on the oval, threw their planes and watched them soar.
The FLC students also had an amazing time at the Teddy Bear Hospital Incursion this week, organised by medical students from Monash University. The students learnt about visiting the doctor and looking after their health, in a fun and engaging way. They loved bringing along their teddy bears and helping to care for them as they participated in different activities. It was fantastic to see the students becoming familiar with some of the people and equipment they may see when visiting a doctor or hospital.
In Reading, the FLC students have been reading a variety of fiction texts. They have been learning to make predictions about what might happen next in the stories they read. Students have been using the pictures, characters and events in a text to help them make predictions. We have also continued to practise reading high frequency words. Our students are becoming fantastic little readers!
In our Phonics sessions, students have been learning to hear, read and write words containing the th, wh and ck sounds. They have been practising blending sounds together to read simple words and segmenting each sound when writing them. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident in using their phonics knowledge when reading and writing words and sentences.
In Writing, the students have been developing their confidence in creating their own simple stories. They have been using picture prompts and videos to help them think of characters, settings and events for their stories. Students have been working hard to write simple sentences to share their ideas. It has been fantastic to see their imaginations come to life through their writing!
In Mathematics, the FLC students have continued to develop their counting and number skills. They are now practising counting backwards from a 2-digit number. We have also been focusing on subtraction, learning that subtraction means taking something away. Students have been using hands-on materials, pictures and real-life stories to help them solve simple subtraction problems. They have been practising taking away a smaller number from a larger number and recording their subtraction problems. Our students have worked incredibly hard and should be very proud of their progress!
What a wonderful Term 3 we have had in the FLC! We are so proud of the learning, effort and enthusiasm our students have shown throughout the term. We cannot wait to see what exciting learning experiences Term 4 will bring!
