Highlights from Heights

It is hard to believe we are at the end of Term 3 already! While it has been busy, there has also been lots of positive learning experiences for all students.

This week, our SLC students had the wonderful opportunity to bring their learning about the Gold Rush and Eureka Stockade to life through an exciting excursion to the Treasury Building and ACMI at Federation Square.

At the Treasury Building, students participated in an engaging, guided tour and deepened their understanding of what life was like on the Victorian goldfields during the 1800s. They explored the living conditions of people on the goldfields and learnt about the Eureka Stockade, including the miners’ concerns about the government’s gold licence fees and the events that contributed to the Eureka rebellion.

The excursion also provided an opportunity for students to further develop their understanding of First Nations’ Peoples and the impact and significance of the Gold Rush for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

At ACMI, students explored The Story of the Moving Image, discovering how television and moving-image technology have evolved over time. They investigated the development of technologies including stop-motion animation, television and video games, providing a fantastic connection between history, technology and creativity. It was a fantastic day of learning, exploration and discovery, and our SLC students represented our school beautifully throughout the excursion!

All students from Foundation to Grade 6 have also been developing their use of Opportunities to Respond (OTRs) as part of their everyday learning. Teachers have been engaging in Professional Learning focused on OTRs and how these strategies can increase student engagement and participation during the explicit teaching / learning phase of lessons. OTRs provide students with more opportunities to actively participate in their learning, demonstrate their understanding and strengthen their ability to retain and apply new information. It has been wonderful to see our students becoming increasingly active participants in their learning, while teachers continue to strengthen their practice in using these strategies to ensure every student has an opportunity to think, respond and demonstrate their understanding.

We would like to wish all our students, families and staff a very safe and relaxing holiday break and we encourage everyone to take some time off their screens and do something outside in the warmer spring weather. 

School returns on Monday 5th October and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school, well rested and ready for another term of fun and learning!
